I think re: numberplates...
As long as you have the bike booked in with the frame # logged at the testing station you are allowed to ride it to and from with no worries. I did this prior to applying for the plate for my lambretta.
If memory serves, then i think you need a front and back brake activated brake light for bikes from 1983 (ish) onwards.

Interesting point about the pipes there. Mine is a race can but doesnt say "not for road use" on it anywhere.
Does that rule apply for general road riding ? or is that just for to and fro MOT'ing?
