Kev - i take it you did use the green 'silicon' rings? not replace them with black rubber ones? dumb question i know - the green ones withstand higher pressure than the black ones
having just replaced the vertical head on my SS you havent instilled me much confidence
but havent had a problem haveing the heads off three times now- i hold the rings in with a smear of grease when placing the head onto the barrell
