Actually they bought the V5 document, not the frame and might be genuine too.

The trick is that if you have an unregistered frame, an ex-race bike or a ex-crashed frame that you reconditioned, it is a lot of hassle to re-register the bike. And you get a lovely Q plate that you have trouble to insure anything more than third party.

So if you buy V5 of crashed (non declared bike) you can claim that you are replacing the frame and apply the old numbers to the new frame (whether you tell the DVLA or not actually...). Then you can legitimately put a race bike on the road, providing you go through the MOT obviously.

Obviously that trick also work for the B4stards that nick bikes....
