Tim I've done quite a bit of experimentation with this on my 998S race bike. I currently run a 14/39 combination and despite the comments made above, it's still eminently rideable, but obviously lifts the front in second. On standard gearing, the bike just wasn't fast enough out of corners. 14/39 is good because (with a new chain, anyway), it's the largest combination you can get with a 96-link chain. Above that, you need to go to 98-links, which is too-long for 14/39, so you end up being unable to back-track. I should point out also that when I say "largest", I am referring to keeping the eccentric in a reasonable position. I suspect that now my chain has begun to stretch a bit, that a 40T rear may be possible too. I actually used to race my Mille-R with a 15/46 combination and a guy I race against uses a 15/48. I'm not sure how everyone here thinks a low-geared combination is something uncontrollable - look at 1000cc Production Club racing and you'll regularly see tuned GSX-R1000's running lower gearing than this. 14/39 Tim - JFDI!
