Gearing

Toying with the idea of changing the gearing on he 999, I've dropped one at the front but still running the standard sprocket on the rear.

I want to go back to standard on the front and go up on the back to either give a similar ratio (3 teeth) or possibly 4-5 teeth on the back.

My question is what do people run and how many links do I need in my chain to achieve the desired gearing
