Did you have the older style, with a single 10mm thread? I believe later bikes had the stepped thread, the inner much thicker and stronger, as used on the 748/916 etc. Also, they screw into the carrier on a left hand thread, so they don't loosen when the nuts are torqued up. The older ones would/could tighten when applying a load of heft to undo stubbon, loctited nuts, thus over-torqing them in the carrier. That's my theory.
