| The problem that Ian had (and possibly others) is that AOL users have their connection to the internet changed automatically by AOL on a regular basis. This is done by AOL to reduce the possibility of hackers getting into the users system by the IP address - i.e. keep changing the address and it makes it more difficult to get in. The technique AOL use is called 'floating IP'.
A consequence of this is that the message board 'looses' your connection on a regular basis - by ticking the 'remember me' box you tell the message board to retain a cookie on your machine that signifies to the message board your connection status. Then if AOL change your connection behind the scenes, it doesn't matter. |
