Shouldn't have to mess around with the rear brake mate.
From memory (as I use a shock guard instead) a hugger should just slot in and around the rear wheel/shock area. I remember it being a little tricky, but no need to remove anything?
If it really was annoying you, then why not remove the rear caliper to give you the necessary slack...no big deal, five minute job.
What make is the hugger?
