996 Fairing sides on a 998 - once and for all

Hi,

Can you fit 996 side fairings to a 998?

Saw in a previous link that the water/oil pump gets in the way so no.
Also heard that it is a good idea to fit them because if the bike is used for track days (yes), it runs too hot with the 998 smooth fairing sides.
Seems odd that given that Ducati and Monster Mob used smooth panels.
Adverts for fairing often claim that 996 fairings can be used for 916,996 and 998's.
I have tried it myself using 996 side panels on my 996R and seems the ignition coils are in the way if nothing else. Didn't get any further than that.

Reason for asking is to buy a full track fairing. Have a good price on a track fairing but still considering used gear from ebay etc. Very few 998 panels knocking around but many for 9996's
