10,000 miles appears to be about right for a clutch. The plates hammer against the fingers of the basket and form ridges which the plates stick on when you use the clutch. You can dress the ridges out if they are not too bad. This is what causes the grabby action. Its only a half hour job to change the plates, a bit longer (and special tools needed) to change the basket.
