Having recently snapped a front brake lever off in the south of france, iI can honestly say you do try everything to get the bleedin thing back on.
I ended up riding with no front brake for 1000 miles. It was safer than my "botch" applying the brake itself as I rode along.
That said, if I was selling my bike when I got back I would go down Antonye's route of a £16 pattern lever to make it look right.
