Neil any filter sitting over the intakes should result in a reduction (no matter how small) in performance as the Airbox is designed as a resonant chamber, which is why sticking them in the air-tubes is a good idea
Te Piper-X ones have a two stage filter and come well oiled. I run them in the Carbon air ducts on my 998R
