Further to my note above, and following discussions with Ducati and my Local dealer.... they know that this problem affects some Ducati's, and suggest that I should take the exhaust pipes off and hacksaw a chunk off the clamp bolt area to allow in to compress the down pipe.
Not what I would call a proper solution or helpfull response. I'll let you know what the final solution is.
