The help and advice I was given was spot-on - just goes to show what a nice bunch DSC members are!
The wheel came out and went back exactly as described. I got round the rear caliper problem by tying a loop of twine to the pannier mounts.
Thanks again. Time to go and scrub in the new Bridgestone BT020
Now for the front wheel..................
