How are you connected to your backup device? Fibre, SCSI? If so which type? Are you running the latest drivers for your SCSI adapter/HBA and firmware? If it's SCSI are you terminated properly etc? Drivers for the device itself?(if required?)

This looks a little like a driver/firmware related issue.

I have to answer yes to all of those, otherwise DELL, there I have said it, won't offer any support, SCSI connection a mix of DLT DLT1 and SDLT drives
