if i traded my 748E in i could get the following at the same price - a multistrada S, an ST4S both are '04 models, an '05 749BP(red/grey frame) or for £500 less an '04 multistrada but not S model...................any thoughts? and i have always wondered when you but a "new" but '04 model it is 2 years old so does it need new belts or something before you get it?

Well Im biased, but who isnt on this site get an ST, as a 999 rider once told me, "a thinking mans Ducati". Performance with comfort (sounds like an ad)

I quite fancied a multistrada myself but my wife (pillion) didnt like the height

yeah - thye are trying to give those 749 thingies away - nope i saw an ad in MCN and they were all £6995 except the multistrada which was £6495/ £6995 for the S version so it got me thinking...mmmmm? only thing that really stops me is my 748 is lovely and very reliable - all the new ones seem to have a few problems needing a warranty claim or two.

whats so special about your 748 that its worth £6995 ?? surely if you part ex in they'll only offere you a ridiculously low part ex price

Try an ST3 before you make your mind up if you are considering a sports tourer.

c'mon guys - did i say i was going to get £6995 for my bike??????????? - i wish !! i was thinking of selling privately for a round £4,500 but seems there are so many 748's for sale that even that amount might be wishful thinking and now you can get some cheap 749's as well. So maybe trading in would be a better option at not losing too much money if i fancied a change - i really wanted a 748R anyway - yellow, but the low price on '04/05 models caught my eye....... an ST4S for that sort of monet seems alot of bike - so good value.

..and just to finish that - an ST4S has a great engine/suspension package and is comfortable and would come with luggage, but a multistrada probably suits the type of riding i do mostly and with only £500 difference between a standardMTS and an S with the ohlins, that sounds like a good deal too, but then again i do like the "sports" character of my 748, but with a few more horses so that means a 749 would be a good option too. at the end of the day this is becoming more hypothetical as any hope of having the cash difference now seem to be rapidly evaporating with domestic and work issues - ho hum, might start doing the lottery. And before anyone spots the spelling mistake in the previous post and thinks i am trying to be poncey - i meant money - the vino rosso is not helping my spelling.

I'll try to answer your initial question, my choice would be the 749 ... I like sports bikes, simple as that.
