I know there's been a lot of stuff on here before about where's good to ride in France. I'm planning to take 2 weeks mid September to ride from Calais to wherever. Provence has been highly recommended. Quite fancy covering a reasonable number of miles and may or may not be accompanied.

All suggestions gratefully received.

Ooh lucky you. we have just come back from spain / france and it was superb.
if it was me i would chop through most of france, and enjoy southern france and northern spain before heading back.
We are planning on going again in sept too, but we will be getting the ferry to spain, having 4 - 5 - 6 days before getting the ferry back.
Not too fussed on congested northern france tbh

I'd recommend Epernay, in the heart of the Champagne region. Visit the Moët et Chandon caves and enjoy a glass of bubbly!

You can't go wrong with the Logis de France guide. Beware that a lot of places "off piste" won't speak a word of English, so take an English-French dictionary or brush up on your basic speech.

Wot Antonye say. used the logis on many trips. I can also recommend a posher hotel in Epernay. 7 course dinner with a different champagne with every course. Great place to start the trip....

After that, head down past Troyes and Le creuset and into the Ardeche. It's a volcanic region so great roads. You could play all week there and enjoy every hour. The other choice to make early on is "are we staying in France or heading to Italy or Spain," as that'll decide the main heading.

If you get a bit further in the decison making process and have decided on a destination, I'd be happy to pick out any bike friendly logis we've used in the past.

Get yerself darn the sarf of France, brilliant roads like the N85/N75 loadsa sun, good food & wine,

Can't beat it.

The onlydown side is the 700 mile plus trip from the tunnel exit to get there. It can be done in a day without going crazy.

I really think the best roads in France are in the East of the Country. Start in the Alsace / Vosges region, (La route des Cretes), you'll also find the best white wines of the country. Then head south to Jura, best road surfaces and bends I've ever ridden, Snetterton looks like a coutryside footpath. Don't forget to look at the landscape when you're there, the moutains and the coutryside are beautiful. Then carry on to the Alps, the centopassi region. Nothing needs to be added.

That's what I would do. Only problem is to get to the East of the country, you must cross the rest of it and that's not that nice... I don't like the South, too many people, common roads, craziest drivers in the country.

Tonio, what's the weather likely to be like in Southern France, say mid-September? Will we cook like hot things being cooked in a hot oven?
