You should read the section on high velocity intakes, narrowing the inlets down instead of opening them up!

If the air/fuel mix is moving too slowly the fuel can drop out of suspension and pool on the sides of the inlet. Leaving the surface rough helps by causing turbulance which encourages mixing. the last thing you want is a mirror smooth surface.
