Actually, I am not surprised by that. I run a whole race with a broken spider spring. The spring gets compressed so much that a break in the ring part of the spring won't affect it too much usually. Still, you need to replace it obviously.

More likely, your clutch pack height was on the lower end of the scale to begin with and now with some wear on the friction plates, it has gone below the minimum level. Inspect the friction plates. If the have friction pads left on them, put them back in but use more plates or a couple of thicker steel plates to bring the stack height back to an acceptable level. Also make sure that the spring plates have some spring left to them and have not gone flat due to overheating.
