I was told by a racer mate it was to keep damp out of the brake fluid, others say it's to soak up the fluid if you have a crash. Who cares they look cool!

I think they stop the fluid from being affected by sunlight too

Would not have thought the fluid was in a race bike long enough to be effected by sunlight ... plus I've never heard of sunlight effecting brake fluid.
