Is a Radial master NEEDED to get the best from radial calipers?

Couldnt turn down an offer on some Showa radial forks with 100mm Brembo, 4-pad radial calipers. These came from a 2005 Aprilia RSV-R.

I can already fit the kit to the bike I'm thinking of as a set of 2.5mm disc spacer rings have just arrived but I'm guessing that a radial master is probably needed to get the best?

Any advise appreciated.

Cheers.

I have fitted converted 749/999 radial master cylinders to my 748R (2000 model) when I had P4 calipers fitted to it, easy to do or just get some 88/1198/1199 master cylinders, that will save you having to convert the 749/999 ones.
Definatly worth doing to get the full benifit of the radial calipers.
You will have to have a set of brake lines made up though.

I have had radial fork bottoms and the same calipers you have now, and fitted discs from an Ohlins kitted 748r/996r/998r, saves using disc spacers.

Have now managed to get hold of a set of monobloc calipers from a 1098 :D , so they will be fitted over the next few weeks.

I did a post a few years ago regarding the 749/999 master cylinder conversion, but can not find it:(

Cheers Chris, all good info...

If I get the forks professionally rebuilt, I wont be able to afford a Radial master - yet!

Been looking at some RCS Radial masters with adjustable leverage 19 x 18 - 16, but £240 :o

Spacers were £20 off Ebay and I have a few sets of discs now, must be nearly a third of the way to catching up with Skids in the spares stock

Frank, you do not need to go down the expensive Radial master cylinder route, Found this on ebay, brand new :)

And you can get adjustable Ducati, Brembo and after market adjustable levers for them.

Cheers Chris, after your suggested listed of bikes last night I think I must of done the same search...

Its in my watch list :)

Manga 22-Mar-2013 20:50

The radial calipers are so named as they are mounted radially to the forks, instead of conventionally. The mounting offers less chane of the calipers twisting around the forks/discs. So I suppose you could get a good setup with just the calipers.

I have a radial MC off a GSXR if you cant find one for sale.

Bas*ard...

'The item is not longer available'

Need to re-read Shazaams! stuff now to get a grip on the correct ratio to be using as well.

Manga, cheers - might well be looking for an alternative soon.

Yep, I just noticed that as well, wish people would not pull auctions when there are bids on the item :(

Good luck at the Hairpins then ;)

Frank is upgrading his road bike brakes I believe.

Howdo!

I fitted a set of 848 forks and radial 4 pad calipers to my Superlight and a Brembo radial M/C..................:D The bike has V strong progressive braking, couldn't ask for more. Works in town as well as from 160+ (Closed road ;) don't want to upset the fun police).

M/C is definitly the way to go to get the best from the brakes. Me GSXR is a cracking bike apart from the brakes, as soon as I've sold me other kidney it's on the shopping list!

Cheers Pablo

Frank,

The Supersport (and 748, Chris) brake master cylinder is 16mm and is not a good hydraulic ratio match to the Brembo 4 pad calipers. The 749/999 radial master cylinder is 18mm and would be a good choice— any 18mm actually.

Radial pumps actually don't offer better stopping power, so a conventional 18mm unit will also work well.

Thats interesting, I have a set of 848 forks and yoke I'm selling. Was it much work to change?

Yep, found that out, that is why I converted a set of 749/999 radial master cylindrs to use with the P4 calipers I fitted to my 748, as per the thread that I posted a few years ago about the conversion that Ant kindly relocated for me fter I failed to find it  .

BTW, if the 749/999 is a ratio of 18mm, what is the ratio of the latest 1098/1199/Penigale master cylinders?

Thanks Larry,

A matching radial master from the same bike arrived today although it needs a little work. Looks like I need to get a pressure operated switch for the brake light switch to work. Fingers crossed its an 18mm.

18mm diameter (same as the 749/999), with a 19mm piston-fulcrum distance (don't remember what the 749/999 distance is).

Initially had a set of Monster S4r forks but found out there where damaged, this led to the 848 forks. Main issue was the lack of alloy on the top yoke (Bottom would have to be shimmed) So Mick at Pro-Mach made some adjustable yokes for the bike, also had to knock up some shims to fit the front wheel after converting the speedo drive to the rear wheel.

Cheers Pablo

I've got one going spare Frank if you want it - it is a single banjo bolt one.

Drop me a PM with your address and I'll stick it in the post for you.

Iconic944ss 28-Mar-2013 11:13

Many thanks, nice one. Calipers came with a single hose, down to a T-piece, so your switch might be just right!
