Can you put that into context, ie what did you have before, how much was it worth and how much were you paying?

Given that a 1199S Tricolore is nearly £25k, I'm not surprised they want a tracker on it!!

I had a 1098S before, owned for 3 years and agreed valued at 10.5K and was paying £235 full comp with proctected NCB (9+years ncb) with Motorcycle Direct. Prior to that Ive had a 996, a 998, a couple of R1's and a Fireblade so its not as though Im new to 1000cc+ bikes.

True, but coming from something less than half the value is going to see a large increase in your premium, naturally.

£235 of £10,500 is 2.23%
£1071 of £23,495 is 4.5%

So yes it's an increase, but it's not as big as it seems!

There are a lot more factors to take into account as well as your history; bike value, rarity, replacement costs, "stealability", etc. A lot of these things will be unknown to the insurance industry so they are being over-cautious on finding a price until those costs become clearer.

It may also be that the insurers think that anyone who can afford £24k on a bike can also afford £1k on insurance... ;)

All of your points are valid and I do understand the underwriters point of view but its just a bit of surprise to see such a big jump in the premium. The calls continue... worst quote so far £9197.19 which was most bemusing - no idea how they managed to come up with that.

At the end of the day its got to be insured by next Friday at the latest :)

Yeah, it's not good I agree.

Mine jumped from just over £100 a year for the 748 to nearly £400 when I bought the Hypermotard and moved to a dual policy. Luckily it's down to just over £200 now with Ducati Insurance, most likely as the value of the Hyper decreases and other factors mentioned come in to play.

Unfortunately you'll just have to pay it seems!

If it's down to the money alone, is it worth checking a six-month policy and then trying again after? Prices might have come down by then? Just be careful you don't screw yourself over with NCB, etc.

If your quotes are online quotes its worth actualy ringing the companies and asking for them to confirm the price and then say its too high its quiet amazing how much they can drop a quote when your actualy speaking to them never go with the first quote always try to haggle it down, i had one insurance company ring me back after i said it was too high for my bayliss rep and they had managed to cut the quote by 50% so always worth ringing and checking and haggling.

Nobody will provide a quote online, I have spoken to everyone over the phone so far. Looks like it is going to be £1k for this year but should drop significantly next year.

A friend of mine has just insured his new Panigale and his 1100 Hypermotard through MCE, total cost including Breakdown and legal is not much over £600

benF04 28-May-2012 19:29

MCE it is, agreed value of £23495 and confirmed with underwriters. Still expensive but at least its now covered. Roll on Friday :)
