Dunlop D207RR V\'s D208

Has anyone idea about the differences between the 2 above tyres.

i.e which is stickier ? how long will they last etc

They seem to be about the same price dealwise at the moment, so i'm up in the air at which ones to buy????

Any feedback positive or negative would be appreciated........

Thanks

Darren

Desmondo 09-Jun-2003 15:49

I've only ever used the 207RR's and they were fine but the 208's will be stickier. Couldn't tell you any more about them though.

Lily 09-Jun-2003 16:01

Couldn't tell you the specific details, but I know that the 208GPs are very sticky when warmed up, but they take a while to get there and are a bit of a nightmare when cold!

They were fantastic on the track though!

JPM 09-Jun-2003 16:05

The profile on the 208GP's is harsher for a start, and will turn a lot quicker, plus I think the tread pattern of the 207's runs pretty much to the edge of the tyre, whereas the 208GP's and 207GP stars don't.

GP's are stickier, but do need heat in them, which to be fair most tyres do, life time will be reduced, personally I prefer grip to durability

stewmcc 09-Jun-2003 16:10

ive had a pair of 208's on for about 500 miles, and have to say thay are the dogs, seem to grip no matter what and only take a short time to warm up, have gone to these from supercorsa's and they are much better for road riding. the supercorsa's never seemed to totally heat up when on the road.
one very satisfied customer

Haley 09-Jun-2003 16:18

Stewmc are you running D208GP's or the standard D208's (ZR i they are called?)

Totto 09-Jun-2003 16:29

Got this from a mag !
Hope it helps

:)

stewmcc 09-Jun-2003 16:33

just the normal 208's. love em to bits.
do just what i want them to.

Haley 09-Jun-2003 16:41

Thanks Totto, its looking pretty good so for the D207RR's after looking at the review.

I think the D208's currently on offer with MandP for £149 are standard ones......

Anybody got any comments on the 207RR's???

Harv748 09-Jun-2003 16:52

I\'ve been told...

that the 208 is a replacement for the 207 basically. The 207 will phase out at some point. They will (have?) introduce a 208rr the same as the 207rr.

So the 208 as Stew says is the new 207...but you may have to wait (or might struggle to find?) anywhere with 208rr's.

I'm having the same dilemma...but I've decided to go for the 207rr's, and leave the trials for someone else just now;)

Rattler 09-Jun-2003 16:56

Let us know......

....what price you get the D207RRs for, if you decide on those...

Tim:frog::frog::frog::frog:

Harv748 09-Jun-2003 17:00

£136 from busters

or

Approx £145 from Mike Davies (DSC member), who can fit them aswell.

Haley 09-Jun-2003 17:15

Rattler,

D207RR's
Demon Tweeks - £145
M and P - £148.99

Although i was originally tempted by Michelin Pilot race for £129 a pair at Busters.... but then thought better of it!

Mackster 09-Jun-2003 17:18

Is that £145 for a pair ? My local just tried flogging me 208's for £185 fitted ?

Haley 09-Jun-2003 18:17

Mackster, yep prices are per pair!
although obviously not fitted.

JPM 09-Jun-2003 19:11

If you want scrubbed 208GP's I can probably get hold of quite a few sets...

Roughly £100 a pair if that's any use

Haley 09-Jun-2003 20:34

Thanks JPM but i think i will go with the middle ground D207RR's

Much appreciated offer though :)

Dazza 09-Jun-2003 20:54

on the metzeler rennsports what does it mean when it says "designed to cope with heat cycles, 4/5 heat cycles only"

cheeers

Rattler 09-Jun-2003 21:37

Dazza....

That relates to the heating up and cooling down of tyres as they are used.

Depending upon the compound of the tyre, a tyre is designed to work at an optimal (optimum!!) temperature. The softer the tyre, the higher temperature it reaches and as a result, the stickier it gets.

Certain soft tyres can only cope with getting hot and then cold again a certain few times. And generally, the softer the tyre, the fewer times it will cope with these heat cycles. )If they are harder tyres, they won't heat up a lot anyway (and provide less grip), so this is less of a problem.

If you look at slicks, these are less likely to cope with heating up and down and hence need tyre warmers to keep them from cooling down and going through this cycle.

The more durable the tyre - read harder - the less it will heat up and hence the less sticky it will get.

On Moto GP the tyres are only designed for one race anyway so as long as they heat up once, they don;t care once they're cooled down - they just bin 'em.

Did that make sense?

ducatimad 09-Jun-2003 21:38

207RRs

Can't comment on the 208s but the 207s are the dogs doodahs. Switched from Dragon Evos and cannot believe the grip and feel is so much better. They warm up quick too. 2 days of the European Superbike School at Brands 16th/17th June so will report back then on track use.:biaggi:

Dazza 09-Jun-2003 21:51

Rattler - thanks for the reply....does that mean that my rennsports will only be good for heating up and then cooling down 4 or five times......and after that will they be no good ?

I never seem to get them really hot anyway...how hard do you have to ride to really heat them up.....?

I have a softer compound on the front and harder on the rear.

If I never really heat them up that much will they last longer than the 4 ot 5 heat cycles it says in that article ?

cheers.

Rattler 09-Jun-2003 22:03

Dazza......

....as you can tell I'm no expert here, there are others on this site who will know far more than me about this.

I reckon that your rennsports should be good enough for 3-4 trackdays if used as they are intended to - ie heat up to their optimal temperature and not immersed in ice between sessions etc..... You will know if they are heating up as they will bobble up on the surface as they wear away.
Sometimes if the tyres do not get quite hot enough, but are subjected to wear on the track they can appear to wear but actually just tear at the surface, no real problem here, its just that they are not operating as they should.

If you are not getting them to their optimum temp, then they will last longer than this, likewise if they are going above this temp and/or usage, they will not last as long - if you see what I mean!!

You would typically have a softer tyre on the front than the back, bacause in normal track usage, the front tyre will not get as heavily used as the rear, so you can have a softer front tyre (in theory giving you more grip) and therefore the tyres will need replacing at the same time. ie the softer tyre will wear out quicker for the same given amount of usage than a harder tyre, but because it has less work to do, should wear at the same rate as the harder rear - does that make any sense?????

Desmondo 09-Jun-2003 22:17

Dazza, my Rennsports have been through a fair few trackdays and are still going strong. Both RS2 front and rear. Never heard of this heat cycle stuff before but I don't think it's anything to worry about.

muttsnuts 09-Jun-2003 22:18

Rattler, surprisingly enough it did ! and at this time of night thats a bloody miracle - I guess no guiness tonight then ? :P

Rattler 09-Jun-2003 22:34

That\'s because I have been drinking.........

Dazza 10-Jun-2003 10:00

Nice one, thats cleared that up then. Thanks fellas.
The rennsports i have are new and only done about 40 miles or so.....I have a chicken-strip about 3/4 inch on the rear.....a few cycles round the big local roundabout still havent sorted it out cos im afraid to lean too much.

I think I reallly need to do a trackday, but I'm too much of a poof and worry about dropping the bike - its a mint SP3!!

HELP!!!!

muttsnuts 10-Jun-2003 14:09

Dazza, I'll scrub the edges up for you on a track day - I am sure Rattlet would volunteer also to help you, although he might scrub more than the tyres if the tyres aren't to his liking !!!

Colin900SSFE 10-Jun-2003 14:47

And I will scrub the fairing in............

Dazza 10-Jun-2003 16:00

Hmmmm, tempting offers.......but i think i'll pass on those if you dont mind!

Do you chaps normally ride to trackdays or trailer or van the bike......
My closest track is Brands, has anyone trackdayed there ?

Desmondo 10-Jun-2003 16:02

You could always ask Lily. I hear she's a scrubber :D

Boy oh boy am I gonna get my arse kicked for that one.

JPM 10-Jun-2003 16:07

BRAVE GUY....

You should of said that after Mallory...

And no doubt she'll take that anger out on me in the mean time !

:(

Desmondo 10-Jun-2003 16:13

Brave? Nah, just stoopid

Guido 10-Jun-2003 17:06

Nads, Boot, whince, tears, pain in lower intestinal region, boot once again, heel grind, more pain in lower intestinal region..........
