May buy a 749s, need advice

Hi Gang, got a few questions for you.

I'm in the market for a new bike and i have seen a 2003 749s for sale with loads of carbon extras inc termis for £5999. It has done less than 6500 miles, but and this is a BIG but, it has not had it's 2 year 20,000km service. It's done 4,500miles since it's 10,000km service 2years ago. It's being sold by a dealer who has had it since november. Should i avoid or buy - it looks like a good deal with all the extras, but i'm worried about the service history.

One other thing, how does this bike compare to a 748s in terms of handling? I had a go on a 748 a few years back and found it needed a lot of shove to turn in.

cheers

sl

Hi,

Check out this thread in the market place section.

FOR SALE - All Carbon 749s, very trick bike

A little more than you have said, but, 2,800 mile, full history and 1 owner with more carbon :D

looks cool, but i'm not a fan of race reps and it's out of my budget.

the dealer for the one i'm looking at reckons it only needs the belts changing and a minor engine service that should come to £350.

"I had a go on a 748 a few years back and found it needed a lot of shove to turn in."

Its only a question of set up..........they are infinately adjustable..........:D

proper 2 year service............around £650! Is it at a ducati dealership?

I can't comment on the 749 in terms of handling or if its a good price or not, but as far as the servicing goes, it will need one before it is ridden.

Use this as a factor when negotiating the price with the dealer. If it hasn't been serviced for 2 years, then it needs the belts changing for definate, and iof they are going to do that, they may as well do a full 24 month service on it.

At a main dealer this will be £500+, at an independednt it will be 10-20% cheaper.

I wouldn't buy it without a service having been done, or a price drop to allow you to have one done somewhere else.

All decals can be removed leaving a polished carbon fibre bike. As for the budget it would work out about £1,250 more by the time you've bought and serviced yours, possibly closer if you have to pay £500 or £600 for the service... my bike has great history, 1 owner, lower mileage and will be worth more when you come to sell it, IMHO.

Can't blame me for trying.

i asked about the service, they are not a ducati dealer and are selling it for a client, they say the 'low' price takes into account that the service has been missed.

it has carbon termi, hugger, belt covers, infills, heel guards, exhaust guard and and aero screen. I get all the standard bits too.

It's either this or the new Triumph 675.
