Oil consumption 996 2002 B

I hadnt checked the oil for some time and I went for a bit of a blast last Sunday, the oil light began to flicker on when I gave it some so I popped back home and put in 500ml to just below full.

Today been out for a 250 mile hammering and put in another 500ml albeit to the full mark.

Mates riding behind said they couldn't see any oil smoke so I suppose on 25,000 miles the oil consumption is acceptable for a hard-ridden bike?

Any comments?

top up 1L!!

seems very very high oil consumption

Cranker V2 27-Feb-2012 09:13

Its now you need to keep an eye on cunsumption. You have now added 1L and the oil is to the max level. There is no data before that, so you cannot confirm what the consumption has been. Note your current mileage with max oil and work from there. It cannot be said you have high oil consumption yet, as you need to baseline the level and mileage.

Exactly. The oil pressure switch can go, giving false lights, but you have to know what level you started at before you can know what the consumption is.

OK I'll check it same position each time and record the mileage.

Only have standard Termi aluminium cans but sounds fantastic to me when you pin the throttle. S'pose its gonna be greedy on oil with big throttle openings, high revs.

But I can't help it.

What brand and grade of oil are you using, 10W40 is a bit thin for some 996s that I know of

Manga 28-Feb-2012 21:04

Just topping up with Halfords 10W40 although I have 4L of Castrol ready for an oil change soon.

Do you suggest thicker oil?

Yep 15W50 as recommended in the older manuals before Ducati switched to using Shell
