Lateral play in sprocket
 

I noticed while cleaning the chain that I've got a bit (about 5mm) of lateral play in the rear sprocket on the 748.

Now I already have a quick release sprocket carrier which has the lips in it, along with the updated sprocket flange which has the big spacer rather than the circlip, so I'm confident that nothing is going to start grinding again like it did last time.

Is this play normal? Can't remember it being there before, but I might just not have noticed! Bike has 10K on it and is a 2000/W.

I posted the exact same problem a few weeks ago with my Renthal sprocket and carrier.

I too have about 5mm lateral play. All cush drives are good. I decided in the end that the circlip grove is causing the problem for me. What is basically happening is the sprocket and cush drives are all moving in the carrier. I think the circlip groove is effectively less distance from the outer edge of the assembly that the OEM one giving it a bit of play.

Doesn't seem to cause me any problems and has put up with a trackday thrashing.

i have something similar on my 999s my dealer said this was ok

ant...what have you done to upgrade the sprocket carrier,i posted a prob on the thread,'swarf on my back wheel',hopefully its just a washer missing where some 'bright spark' before me changed the sprocket n forgot to put it back on....but i am interested in avoiding it in the future if thats poss,jase

There are two type of "sprocket flange" (the bit that the sprocket bolts onto) - the early ones which uses a circlip to hold a washer in place, and the later ones (late 996 onwards) that get rid of the circlip for a big washer.

I had the swarf problem because the circlip groove wears, allowing the whole flange assembly to back onto the swingarm and wear it down - hence the swarf. Note that this is completely different to the cush drives back out and cause wear.

I replaced the sprocket flange with a later version (£35 from a breaker) which has no circlip so it's definitely not that! The quick release carrier I have also has lips in it to stop the cush drives backing out, so it can't be that either!

I've not noticed it before, but then I've never checked it either. I was just cleaning the chain the other day and felt the play. It was just a general question to see if it's supposed to be like that.

ant...i think ill go for the 998 style one to fit to my 996,but looking at the 'old ' drawing,i still think the plonka never put a washer on,allowing a cpl of mil movement,enough to push the sleeve out a mil or 2 and allow it to grind on the swing arm,jase

Take it apart and see - the circlip keeps the washer in place but because the grove that the circlip sits in wears, this allows everything to move hence the milling of the swingarm!

Looks like I need a new set of cush drives too now then!
