WTD: iT/pc advice

Hello

I wonder if somebody can advise me as to why this could be,

I have a Gigabyte GA-8N-SLI Royal motherboard, and currently have 2x1GIG ram and 2x256mb so total 3GIG
Have now taken out the 2x256 and replaced with 2x2GIG ram (not the same make chipset as the 1GIG's, but like for like)
Ok the bios sees the new memory ie total 6GIG but when I check in the system is states 3GIG?
I have double checked the memory by installing them individually but every time I go over 3GIG the system will not register.
The mother board will take 8GIG max, so what am I doing wrong:confused:

any ideas?

32-bit versions of Windows XP can't use more than 3Gb of pyhsical memory, or 4Gb if you set some switches. Windows Vista 32-bit will allow you to see 4Gb. If you want to use all of your memory then you'd need to switch to 64-bit version.

Hello Antonye

Thankyou for the info and links.

If I change the boot ini file to enable the PAE,
other than hardware issues would you advise this?

Never done it myself, but if it doesn't work you can always change it back ... hopefully!
