whats best??

whats best lubricant for electrical terminals??-- the starter motor connection and starter relay specifically, on the carby SS , although both are covered by little rubber boots to protect them the boots are fitted upside down and are not self draining- they fill up with water quite easily! and rust the terminals-- would a smear of vaseline as you would on the battery terminals be sufficent- or is there a more specific electrical grease/protector i could use? i know i should'nt ride in sub zero temparatures with salt on the roads but it was the voices made me do it

p.s am now fitting my spare starter motor:barfy:

Molycote 111 or DC4 is a good bet (if you can find it), failing that
try RS electrical silicone grease.

thanks darren - would i get the RS grease from electricians supplies or order thru RS?

Try one of these ...

for the starter motor rubber boot, poke a hole on the bottom of the rubber boot so that any moisture can drain out (ie: need a somewhat decent sized hole to avoid capillary action).

also put some dielectric grease or similar inside at the connection.

Yes RS components ,
Silicone Grease
stock number 494-124

Even good old Halfords do a battery terminal connection spray at a reasonable price - comes out as a funny green foam - but at least its easy to see where its been sprayed !!!

thanks for sharing your knowledge guys- have gone for the RS silicon grease- i guess you can use this on any electrical connection and did think of adding a drain hole !!!

Darren27 27-Mar-2006 13:59

The RS should be good on any electrics, just be careful as it is not a lubricant. Its not as bad as the DC4 which can wear out a new grease gun with one fill, but is good at keeping the water out.

Waxoyl is also ok for battery terminals and connections to the starter and solenoid.
