Tyre life/Replacements 749R

I have done 2500 miles now on my original Pirelli Diablo Corsa rear and it is now due for replacement.

The tyre has never let me down, seems super sticky and I think 2500 miles is quite good for a rear ?

I was going to replace like for like as the front tyre is still mint but a local shop had some Pirelli supercorsas that he recommended ( Do not know which ones he had ) and also the same type Michelin that is fitted to the 999R.

I personally did not like Dunlops as years ago I had a set, not sure what ones , that had a really high profile and when the bike leant over it just seemed to drop. They might very well be better now but I am still a bit wary.

Do you reckon I would be better off sticking to the Diablo Corsa or change the pair to the supercorsas (Or Pros ) or the Michelins.

What have other 749R owners tried and what were their views compared to the Diablo Corsas, better or not as good.

Supercorsas are great track tyres but will take a long time to warm up on the road plus they have very little tread (in case you use it in the rain).
Diablo Corsas are a better road tyre and unless you do a lot of track days (then you will probably waste the rear in 1-2 track days) then I would stick with what you know.

The thing is that different tyres have different profiles and circumferences, as well as that nirvana we are looking for super grip.

All this has to be taken into account when you buy a different make.

Some might say the profile of your original tyre was so low that you have had to adjust your bike to stand it on its nose to get it to turn. Adding a higher profile tyre is just going to make this worse.

So my sixpenneth is that you need to included what tyres you have when you set a bike up to handle to your liking, altering them is as different as raising your forks further through the yolks.

Dunlop 209 gp's mate, fantastic tyre. dual compound so harder in the middle to wobble around on the road, and with soft sides for ultimate grip on your track days! ;) Works for me!

you mention the michelin's that are sometimes on the 999r. My 749R came with these (Pilot Race), i did not get on with them at all. the are ok when fully warmed up, but that does take quite a while. i did not like them on the road.

Mate,if you are happy with the Corsa's stick with 'em. (no pun intended!)
If you fancy a change,I can recommend Michy Pilot Powers.Very similar feel to the Diab's and 3k to a rear. Not the cheapest tyres, but hey,Dukes are not the cheapest bikes!;):D

ive tried diablo corsas, michelin pilot race & pilot power on now. they all good tyres. its down to what you like etc. for me,the pilot race are more track focused, powers are great for road however i havnt been on a track on them yet.

I have used 3 rear diablo corsa's (5000miles) and have just changed to 209 gp's (190Rear on the guru's recomendment, and changed head angle) absolutly fantastic, stable, turns on a sixpence and is a lot more agile.

iang 12-Oct-2005 20:14

Butch, I thought that fitting a larger rear tyre slowed the steering down ?
or is this why you change the head angle, if so how hard is it to do and I presume that it did make a difference, was this on the road as well as on the track.
Do you rate the 209gp as good as the three diablos ?
I also presume that the rear wheel is wide enough to accept a 190 tyre

Which compound mix are you using?

Lily 12-Oct-2005 23:22

another 209 fan here!!

great tyres and if you an' be bothered changing them it's surprising how long they will last

JPM 12-Oct-2005 23:26

I went from 207GP stars on my 996 to 208GP's on the Bostrom and finally onto 209Gp's on the R only 4 days ago in Jerez, straight from a 208GP and instantly went quicker, felt more solid and way more grip.

Personally I've never got on with super corsa's and the only other tyres I ran on a duke were BT010's when they first came out and they were suprisingly good

Well Lily and Butch, after reading your rave reviews on the 209gp I have bought a pair, so I will try them out and see what I think.

I take it that you tried them first on track and liked them but i
hope that they are ok on the road !!

I never ride in the wet, mainly country roads and I found the Diablo corsa very good, are these even more sticky, ok for the road and what mileage do you think that I can expect.
Also do they come in different compounds or just the one.

I hope they are ok for the road or they will be getting swapped for a rear diablo corsa !!

I've got the Michelin Pilots Sports that came on my 749 and they suit it really well although I can find their limits they have plenty of feel. I seem to be wearing the front more than the rear after 2200 miles and will most likley have to replace the pair by 3000. I picked up a rear Hi-Sport for 70 quid to try and I'll either stick a used 207RR I've got kicking around on the front or see what comes up cheap. If I have to pay normal price I'll have a 60 profile 207RR for extra front end grip.
