Powder coating Hello would you recommend powder coating a tank? Or is it not the done thing:confused: regards TopiToo |
No reason you can't.But the finish won't be as good as paint. |
Hello Jasper That's not a problem, would it be ok to get it shotblast before hand? I am having the frame/sub frame, yokes, swinging arm and other bits done, is there anything I need to advise the painters what to be careful with apart from all of it? TopiToo |
Yes.Provided it is just the empty shell or EVERY hole is blocked. You do not want grit in the tank!! No issues really,it's just a steel tank! |
It would depend what the shot in the blaster was, certainly wouldn't use sand or such like in case it gets left behind in the tank, Getting it dipped to strip it may be better idea Colin at OIF (Oxford Industrial Finishers, where Seena3, Dallas and myself get our work done) will probably know, he may be coming to Donington next weekend so I could ask him then. |

WORD OF WARNING What ever you do DO NOT shotblast a tank or a modern Ducati frame! The guy who does my blasting and any powder coating that I want done, uses "cold iron" on the frames and other cycle parts, being carefull to keep the pressure down and not to work to closely to the part. We do petrol tanks normally with aluminium oxide, then fished off with glass bead. This uses a lot less pressure, removing the paint without damaging the surface of the tank. If you let an animal at it, who is used to blasting car chassis or wire wheels, you are liable to end up with apile of scrap. The guy I have used for over 10 years now is Foremoast Coatings, they are just north of East Grinstead, 01342-833455. They are really good, they have just done the chassis work on Classic Bike magazines project bike. Chris |
Hello Many thanks for your input, sorry this side of things is all new to me:) I can confirm the tank will be sealed before any work is done, so no residue will be left in the tank, the guy assures me he has done many bike parts in the past and will mask off as needed. I hate giving my bike parts to anybody else:( fingers crossed all will be well;) TopiToo |
