996 crank bearing failure

Well I ignored all the warnings along the way and Sunday the 996 packed up.

I got recovered and stripped off the alternator side crankcase cover to find the alternator nut had worked loose.

Stator has been pulled off the inside of the crankcase cover and ground down, causing it to fail-
Question - can I helicoil the now ovalled and stripped out threads, as the rest of the cover is ok apart from the crank end bearing which has a worn face?

Rotor is damaged inside where the stator has ground against the sides and flywheel bolts.

Starter clutch one-way clutch rollers have flat spots on them.

Rotor nut threads are worn away on the innermost face.

Washer behind flywheel split.

Main bearing on crankshaft is broken and looks like one of the ball bearings is gone.......

Honestly, do you think the work required is;

1. Worth it?
2. Capable of being done by the average home mechanic? (apart from the measuring of the crankshaft and conrods, journal bearings, etc?)

As I have been given a basic estimate of at least £1,000 labour + parts.

More than do-able by the home mechanic, no reason why you couldn't measure stuff either, assuming you have the correct tooling, or can get it.

Depends how good an average home mech you are, but by the end of it, I would say you'd be well above average!

Well I have had an offer for a pro to strip down the engine if I take it out.

He will charge me under £200 to strip & report what's needed.

Oh dear,

http://www.ducati-john.co.uk/alterna...aining-nut.htm

Difficult to say what you can and can't do yourself without knowing how handy you are with the spanners etc.
A look at a workshop or Haynes manual might help you decide. Never seen the haynes manual for the 748/996 so don't know at what point they go for the "refer to dealer" advice :D

Not a cheap fix, maybe do some of the donkey work yourself and get someone who knows what they are doing to do the tricky stuff.

Most of the internet sites I have read about this say it did not affect the later 996 - well ******** cos it does.

Ducati Coventry service told me it needs checking regularly.
