Wheel Bearing Removal
 

I need to replace the wheel bearings in my 996 as they are knackered.

When the spacer is 'out of the way' there is not much room on the lip of the inner race to get a drift on.

My question is - what sort/size of drift have people used to get them out? I know that you can get brass/copper/steel drifts in various sizes so i'd like to know what size works.

That's similar to the one I use on the Ducati front wheel, for other bikes where you can get the centre spacer to drop out of the way more I use a 12mm round bar which just doesn't work on Ducati front wheels

Yeah i was surprised how much the Ducati one dodn't move out of the way compare to my other bikes :o

Having replaced the bearings on a Hypermotard wheel, I can feel your pain!

One tip, in case you didn't know, is that there is a small slot at the edge of the inner spacer that you are supposed to use to get a bit more purchase on the bearing.

It is only a small slot cut in but there's definitely one there!

Good find - Just ordered one for the hell of it!

I've used a 'total destruction' method when the needs must:
Remove dust seal on bearing, cut bearing cage, rip out using pliers or mole grips etc - move bearings together usually gives enough clearance to be able to rive inner sleeve out - great stress reducer ;)

I like that :-) A great stress reliever......until you realise you were working on the wrong wheel :eek:

Thanks for the pic, I have found the small cut out in my spacer so i will try and drift it out. If i don't succeed with that, i will get a slide hammer (Nelly's suggestion) and use that.
