Fuel Pump Gone?
 

Hi All

Just pulled my 998s out of the garage after a year of inactivity. No longer get familiar "hum" when switching on at the key. Bike turns over fine, but won't fire.

Suspected fuel pump, so checked voltage at fuel pump connector and found 12.38v. Took fuel pump assembly out of tank and traced all the way to the black plastic connector - same voltage.

I guess this means the fuel pump is goosed?

I've only ever dealt with these assemblies in their entirety - what is the "replaceable" bit, and is it likely I'll find one on here / ebay or is it an expensive dealer visit?

Nothing silly like alarm/immobiliser ? Sidestand ? in gear ? kill switch ?

Been there and seen many of the above....

one time... (not at band camp) at Brands we had it with a 748r.... scratching our heads for 20 mins.... and mate walked past and kicked up Sidestand... LOL

This should sort it.....
 

This just happened to me on my 998.

Check the fuel pump relay (little black box widget under the battery, next to indicator relay). Mine was corroded and goosed - replace, and smile.

Mine decided to play up when I unloaded the bike at Nogaro at the end of a ferry journey and 450 mile drive for 2 days on track - oh, how I laughed.

HUGE thanks to Flavio of the Ecole de Performance for sourcing me a new relay.

Thanks for the (prompt!) feedback. If it was any of the above, would I still expect to get a positive voltage through to the pump?

'Fraid I dunno. Not very clever when it come to electricals.

All I found was -

Goosed relay - no fuel pump prime sound - stay where you are.
New relay - fuel pump music - depart for lots of laps.

Relay is not expensive - so well worth trying first.

If so, where are you based Ip.

Not sure if the relay is common to all 748/916/996/998.

Look underneath the battery - by memory there are 2 little black boxes (large sugar cube size) in rubber holders. One is the indicator relay, the other for the fuel pump. There may be more than 2.

Simply unplug to replace/swap.

The fuel pump relay supplies the +12volts to the fuel pump if all conditions are satisfied i.e sidestand switch etc. If your measuring +12 volts at the fuel pump connections then in theory the relay is okay. However the pads of switched relays become pitted with time resulting in, effectively a dry joint which shows up as a high resistance. Basically if unloaded can easily measure 12volts (similar to unloaded batteries) but when loaded by the pump causes all the voltage to drop across the pitted relay pads. If your measuring the voltage with the pump installed then the chances are it's the pump. One final test before I would replace the pump would be to short out the switched connections on the relay socket. If it still doesn't work then I would try to run flying wires from the battery directly to the pump interconnect. This would eliminate the wires in the loom.
