R&G crash protectors
 
Has anybody fitted them to their 749/999?

I've had R&G protectors before on another bike - the guy I sold the bike to tried them out (in a practical test!!) & they actually worked really well. Used by a lot of race teams too.

I'm not too happy about cutting the fairing though.

The R&G are a great product, I used them on both my R1's

But I have heard that they may not be as well suited to the trellis frame of Ducati's. It seems that they may bend the frame mounting point in a accident, which will probably write off the bike

dickie, have you witnessed it? I must admit, bending the frame was one of my concerns. That's really why I was asking if anybody had already fitted them.
R&G's website shows them on a 'Legs 11' sponsored race bike (see link below). Does anybody know anything about this team?

I suppose if that's the case, can anyone point me in the direction of some reasonably priced trackday bodywork?

no havnt seen it myself but was going to put them on my monster for desmodue racing but was warned very strongly against it by probably the most knowlegable ducati guy in england so i trusted his advice and didnt bother. certainly wouldnt put them on my 999 just get some track bodywork. quite a few places you can get it now. i got some stuff from oz but havnt got round to putting it on yet.

I think you can get crash protectors that mount onto a rod that goes right through the frame from one side of the bike to the next between the V of the cylinders (might even use the engine mountings which are strong enough).

The R&G crash bungs that fit a 9*6 don't actually use an engine mount, but consist of two large alloy plates that clamp onto a frame tube. Each of these plates has a 'ledge' which butts against another tube to stop them turning. A large alloy bar runs between the two plates in the vee of the engine, the bungs being screwed into each end of this. These dont fit 'R' versions apparently, the kit for /9 bikes is only slightly different.

ive just fitted the engine bolt mounted kit. The engine bolt is replaced and a cast metal unit then bolts onto that and around a portion of the trellis frame.
The crash bung then bolts throught the fairing into that metal unit.
Always used them, and they have saved me a fortune in the past.
only gripe is the metal insert which sits in the engine bolt insert was 10mm too long, and i had to whip it off with a grinder to get it to fit!
not good when you pay £150 for it!

I guess the fact that race teams don't seem to use them tells me there must be a very good reason.

Yup...

Race teams have got pots of money, loads of spare fairings and clutch assemblys.

If you get well designed engine mounted bungs then they should minimise the risk of the frame getting twisted or bent from all but the hardest of knocks.

From what I've seen of 748/998's and 749/999's if you lowside them on the RHS then your clutch takes a mighty battering as well as the fairings
