999 lump into 996 frame - is it possible?
 

As the title says - is it possible to fit a 999 lump into a 996 rolling chassis? Got the chance of a 999S and would like to fit it into my own chassis, but assume I'll need wiring looms and all sorts, so is it even worth it?

Or, build in extra reliability and fit a 996 engine as well!

I would recommend trying a properly sorted 999S before you decide - you may be surprised. As for the looks - it grows on you, I love it now. :)

Well Frankie Chili did it so I guess it must be possible. You might need a WSB crew and lots of money. If the engine fits without mods to frame i'd be surprised but that's probably the easy part. Wiring loom change possible as needs different CPU. What about airbox etc? What about exhaust - custom job?

Would be great to see someone do it.

I can't see ya having too many probs with the oily bits BUT you may find yourself buying some 998 bits where both the 999 and the 996 bits are not suitable. e.g exhaust headers.

The wiring is a potential headache as well, again you might be better off trying to source a 998 loom rather than mix and match and or adapt a 996 and 999 loom.

The side panels on the fairing are different as well, you can just butcher a 996 panel tho if you mount the coils as per 998. I have seen 998 with 996 panels cobbled on.

As with any job like this you won't run into any problems that time/money won't fix!!

I can't help thinking that it would be a load easier just to buy a 998s or 996r or 998r take yer favourite goodies off yer 996 that fit the new bike and sell off whats left. Less cost and far less hassle in the long run maybe?

To really know where you are with this before you start you could do with your bike, the 999s and a 998 lined up together and play "spot the difference".

a 998r has the same engine as a 999r 2003/4
a 998s has the same engine as a 999s 2003/4

in both cases the basic engine architecture is the same its the bits like headers, wiring and plumbing that differ.

Don't get me wrong, I would dearly love a 998R, but can't find one for sensible money, bearing in mind I'm gonna track it, and have been offered a 999S for around £5k. Hence the question.

i ran a post recently on this testastretta into a 748 frame type subject, apart from the already mentioned wiring loom etc, you will need to ensure that your using a frame that was orignially testastreta engined frame as the cross bracing is differant.

however i understand that this can be sorted out if you take your frame to a frame builder to alter, of course youl need a pattern from the right type of frame.


if you opt against this project id be interested in the engine you have ldentified? :D

Anyone know if the swing-arm pivot in the 999 cases matches the 996 or the ST4, or is it a third size?

Hasn't Skids already done it??
