Filter removal (base plate)
 

mmmmmh...simple job turned into a bit of a nightmare!

Tried to remove the oil filter a couple of days ago, and despite using a 'variety' of tools (including a filter wrench that actually destorted the filter casing!) it still won't budge. All I'm left with now is a seriously mangled mess!

I've done a search and know that some have devised a tool that locates into the holes in the base plate of the filter, with a socket drive on the end. I believe Paul James has one, but I have been unable to get hold of him via a U2U.

Therefore...does anyone have

a) Pauls phone number
b) a similar device/tool as described or
c) any ideas/words of wisdom!

I've just changed my rear shock over to an SPS/Ohlins unit...and I'm getting frustrated just looking at it...I wanna try it out!!!

I bought a chain wrench and a clamp wrench and still couldn't get enough purchase.

In the end I knocked a screwdriver through the filter (gently in case there was any internal bits sticking out) just enough to get some leverage on it, to turn it.

It did work - eventually.

Mind you that's on an ST - I guess it should be the same for yours?

Cheers ...but been there with the screwdriver...tried that and still wouldn't budge before messing up the casing! All I'm actually left with now is the base plate, as I've removed all of the internals from the filer to expose it.

I belive that there's a special tool that can be used to remove the remains of these knackered filters. Try doing a search of the board.

Have done Murray...see my original post. The problem is that the only person that I know of who has one is Paul James...and I can't get hold of him via U2U.

Hence the reason why I'm hoping someone else may have copied his tool, or have another bright idea. I'm not keen on drifting the thing out with a hammer/chisel, as this could potentially really screw things up!
