tim check back to my thread about lap timers as a few peeps posted up on there.

Felix 17-Feb-2005 17:25

Transponder is not the same as a laptimer. A transponder is used by race control to record everyone's laptime in a race. It does not have any readouts. The race organizers will tell you which model you need. The TranX260 is widely used.

For lap timers see other threads.

Don't some of the laptimers/transponders suggested in the thread i posted work for racing though?

Felix 17-Feb-2005 17:53

Lily, lap timers require a infrared beacon trackside at the start/finish line. These for the rider's information only and are completely seperate from the race organiser's requirements. Many of them such as Derby-Phoenix or NewEra require a transponder to determine race finishing order and lap times. Transponders are of no use to the riders themselves.

If your race club requires a transponder, they'll tell you which one and you need to buy one. If they don't require one, don't buy one. If you want to keep track of your lap times for racing, practise, and trackdays you can choose from several makes of laptimers.

ahhh, thanks for that mister, cleared up things and i am glad i didn't buy the lap timer with beacon that i though acted as the transponder for racing!!!

i have got myself a laptimer now, although not certain if I will be competent enough to use it or not...lol

Prices for the TranX260 are going UP as the season draws near!
I just got mine from HSSports which was the cheapest place I could find them. There's not a lot price difference between suppliers tho, all are around the £200 mark.

They can be rented at the meetings but it works out cheaper in the long run to buy one and flog it on at the beginning of next season... they're going on fleabay for around £170 a pop!!
Having your own also saves another job at the meet with renting one, and what if you're last in the queue and miss out?

must add... New Era are confident there'll be enough to go round.

I've just ordered a rechargeable one from the ESS site - £200, plus a guaranteed buy back price (varies dependant upon age).
