Snapped Chain

Anyone ever suffered snapped chain? Flat out towards the end of Hangar Straight @ Silverstone? Adding insult to injury, my mate was riding, fortunately he was unhurt apart from a bruised ankle, and he managed to stay upright, so it could've been a lot worse.
Gory photos to be found here.

Suffice it to say I now need to find:

1 x Generator side engine cover for a 998 motor
1 x chain guard (carbon ones, I've discovered, tend to be of no use ;-) )
1 x LH 57mm Titanium Termi can (unless anyone knows someone who can re-build them?)
1 x 525 chain (not DID - it snapped clean through a link)

Got 2 weeks to sort it before Brands, so any ideas gratefully received.

Cheers,

-- Frazer

Hello and welcome sorry to hear of your chain snapping, One or 2 others have had that happen http://www.ducatisportingclub.com/xm...0223#pid188680

Fiver 05-Feb-2006 15:40

mine snapped last week - from pull away @ low speed.
The bike is new to me (first bike) and i dont think the guy who had it before me coulda looked after the small things on it, as the sprocket retainer turned out to be missing.

Ironically i was on my way to pick up a new rear sprocket when it snapped.

I ended up replacing the lot (front and rear sprockets and chain) which is a good thing.

oh and for sheer comedy timing value (i already posted this in the week so sorry for repeating myself) as i stood on the road side getting ready to push home, my gf rang me and dumped me.

Glad your pal wasnt hurt! It really sucks about the damage to your bike!

Yep I had it on my 996 last year Thankfully I stayed on But chain went through crankcase ! I had only been on the bike for about 6 months (2000 miles)

Went for fresh motor as worked out cheapest and quickest fix.

Retainer plate missing is a recall fault on some Ducati's, the ST series especially. My ST2 was missing one.

weeian 05-Feb-2006 18:27

Glad to see your friend wasnt hurt, that could have been alot worse.

Sorry to divert from the poetry in motion, but remember the crankcase protectors(snapped chain thru crankcase stopper),are they still available?

frazerr 10-Feb-2006 15:27

aka.eric - order the crankcase protector thing from JHP - not in stock but promised by Monday. 14 quid or thereabouts

BTW, it was a DID chain, the replacement will not be!

m1keyp 10-Feb-2006 16:32

Just spoken to JHP, they are ordering 20 as result of the calls received from this thread.

Why was this not fitted as standard?:(

m1keyp 10-Feb-2006 16:38

JHP have just called me, Ducati in their infinite wisdom have discontinued the chain protector.

Tossers:flame:

aka.eric 10-Feb-2006 16:41

Just been told the same, looks like make your own time.Any engineers within the ranks?.

frazerr 10-Feb-2006 18:24

Just got home to find a voice mail telling me the part's been discontinued.

Clearly no demand then. Oh wait ....

m1keyp 14-Feb-2006 21:01

Count me in for one please Andy

andyb 14-Feb-2006 21:02

That doesnt look too complicated..............ill get back to you.........

Has anyone got one as a sample?

[Edited on 14-2-2006 by andyb]

rockhopper 14-Feb-2006 21:04

Maybe Ducati stopped making it because it didn't work and they would be leaving themselves open to claims if they continued to sell it.

I think we did a thread on this last year and we found out then that it had been discontinued!

andyb 14-Feb-2006 21:07

If you could fit what amounts to a strip of stainless steel in there, as you can, it has to be better than the chain whacking the alloy or mag housing if it breaks!

rockhopper 14-Feb-2006 21:14

True.

BDG 15-Feb-2006 01:33

Andy, i'll have one as well if you can do them, are you sure it won't be made out of bent copper and not stainless:P

Naw, it'll be too expensive:frog:

andyb 15-Feb-2006 23:24

Any idea of what these cost from ducati when you could get them?

frazerr 16-Feb-2006 00:35

14 quid or so

skidlids 16-Feb-2006 01:01

When my mate Adrian gets back from his holiday in France I have a list of jobs for him as well as bits for the Minitwin bike I also have aengine case protector on the list and as I have a left engine case sat on the shelf it shouldn't take him to long to come up with something, afterall he works in a Sheet metal workshop
