Best Rear Shock For DD?
 

With the wealth of knowledge on here thought id open this one up to the floor. My bike still has sad old standard rear shock on it and after using a slightly imporved 900ss shock with linear spring off Doms bike for Castle Combe i really dont want to go back to the naff original one!

Ive been looking on eBay and cant find a single shock that will fit. Cant afford £400 for a nitron.... there must be a happy medium? im not going to be setting lap records, i rarely keep the bike upright or out of big air barriers so i just want the bike to be firmer at the rear when exiting corners.

I know people might not want to give away any racing secrets but what the best shock for a Class B bike..... For those on a budget. Any suggestions?

In my years in Class B I used a Hagon type N shock as I picked it up cheap from a breakers, it was off a injected model so was 5mm longer than the standard early SS shock. a new one according to their site is £275.

You get a good shock for your Money from Nitron which comes with adjustable rideheight.

I currently run a Ohlins but they're not cheap even seciondhand as they seem quite rare (Did Nelly sell the one he advetised)

WP also do a good shock but no rideheight adjuster but that never bothered Geoff Spencer when he was wining Class A races

Not sure what Penske do in the way of shocks for the SS but the one on my 996 is awesome and better than the standard Ohlins that Ducati firt the the Rs and SPSs.

Fox also make an excellent shock but haven't seen much of there stuff about
Also Technoflex make a decent shock but not sure of there prices

May be worth looking at getting a Showa off a 900SSie and having it re-sprung and re-gassed

Spoke to Nitron last week, the full 3 way adjustable high speed / low speed damping race SS shock with remote ressie is £560 - so no, you deffo cant afford one!

You only save £60 for down grading to two way so seems a bit of a pointless cost saving considering.

The Ohlins unit is listed at £601 inc VAT on the Harris website.

Was going to order a Nitron this week for my 800Ss until a got a £400 bill for MOTing the race van this morning :(

I won't buy from nitron again. When put on a dynograph after a full service mine had absolutley no damping for the first 50% of travel, it was all on the spring. When re-serviced and fixed for the second time it now works ok on track but i put it back on the dynograph and the damping curve was ****, they said thats what they all look like. Many people agree that nitron don't have enough experience in bikes yet, they're mainly car suspension specialists. A maxton or ohlins offer much better damping consistancy.

I put the Track Nitron on mine 2 years ago. Think it cost about £400. There's no need for the top spec model IMHO. We spent a lot of time getting it set up right. Matt T rode the bike on Saturday at Pembrey for a few laps so it may be worth asking him what he thinks of it. He seemed rather complimetary about the handling.

We used a 750ssie on my class B bike in 2007 to take the title (i think thats what Skids fitted). Although, im sure an Ohlins or properly setup Nitron?? one like Matt T had would be even better.

In fact my current class A bike rides almost the same as the class B bike did, just a little bit quicker ;)

dean, get a good 900ss rear shock and have it refurbed for around 80- 100 quid including a linear spring to suit your weight and riding style. there are a few guys advertising this service on flea bay and for an extra 25 quid they will do a full cosmetic job onit as well so it will look the dogs as well as handle much better. More importantley though, i would invest the money on the front end of the bike by sending your forks off to Ktech, new spings shims and oil and valves for 175 quid!!!

I've got a nice Wilbers shock, speak to dave from Solo coarse racing, I don't know what they cost though, Also, it's worth mentioning that my lap times have not improved at all since changing to a fantastic shock from a knackered one, just a thought! before you spend loads of money.

is the correct answer! Racecraft first, once you've reached a point where you cant go faster, then worry about it :)

Thanks for all the advice, a nice cross view of rear suspension there. going to look for a 750ssie or 900ss shock i think. Then if i ever get a podium i might look to upgrade..... Be a while yet tho, gotta stop riding into barriers first! lol
