View Full Version : HL2 - Deathmatch

JPM

Well last night I downloaded and installed HL2 Deathmatch, had a quick go, first thing was all of the keys were remapped, so was merily standing in a corner defenseless getting killed because I couldn't move, once I'd figured out the keys were wrong, had quite some fun, even laughing when some poor bugger got killed by a flying toilet - that good old gravity gun!!! LOL!!!

Anyways.... as a few of us play, I was thinking why don't we arrange to have a go online? you can setup a friends list through Steam, what says ye?

If that was all blah, blah, blah.... don't worry, if you had HL2 you'd understand

I'll have to get myself a copy of this bad boy ....

It's a great laugh when you realise that everyone is playing "soccer" by using the gravity gun to throw a car around and trying to squish the opponents!

Right - just finished HL2 (at last!) so it's now on to DeathMatch :D

Sounds like a laugh...although at the moment I seem to be suffering from feeling a bit ill after playing for more than 15 minutes!!!

I know this sounds wierd but it has been documented on both HL1 and 2. Something to do with the speed he moves and the graphic used apparently. Also having just come from playing Far Cry for the past week or two where the movement is a lot slower, I don't think that helps!

Gonna have to break myself back into it I think!

I have also downloaded the deathmatch thingy, but have never really delved into the world on Onlinegaming...how do we go about this then?

antonye
04-Dec-2004, 13:06
I had exactly the same motion sickness when I was running HL2 at the native resolution of my TFT at 1280x1024.

I dropped the game screen size down to 1024x768 and didn't have any problems after that.

So drop your res down a notch and see if that helps.

So are we going to do this then chaps and chapets?

Blimey and I thought the original Wolfenstein was scary.....

Trying to fight my way through Medal of Honour at the mo, all a bit tame but then I AM OLD!

Harv748
06-Dec-2004, 12:27
Yeah I'm up for it...although you'll have to talk me through the stages of ensuring we are all on the same server or whatever?!?!

How do we go about it?

JPM
06-Dec-2004, 12:32
No idea, I guess the easiest thing is through steam you can setup a list of "friends" so we could see who is on-line...

Funnily enough I go by the name of freak... maybe we should try that first, and see if we hook up etc.

Have you downloaded and installed the deathmatch option?

Dagft question is there amn HL 1? Just done a trawl of the SE's and it looks a brill game, but think I'm gonna need to cut my teeth on the original before I sacrifice myself to you lot. It's bad enough on track, on line would be suicide!

Harv748
06-Dec-2004, 12:42
Yep...just had a quick look at the deathmatch options and it seems straight forward...pick a server and play!

I'll stick with harv748 as no one else has it.

Just tried search for freak...250+ matches!!!

JPM
06-Dec-2004, 12:44
Thought there might be a few !! LOL!!!

Is anyone using Ol' Painless? (My UT2004 name)

Harv748
06-Dec-2004, 12:48
Nope...don't look like it.

JPM
06-Dec-2004, 12:55
Right I'll be changing to that tonight then :D

antonye
06-Dec-2004, 13:15
Why don't we all stick [DSC] at the front of our normal (board) nicknames, as this will help us both search and identify each other....

Harv748
06-Dec-2004, 13:17
crazy idea...but it might just work:D

Yes, there is a Half-Life, and also the expansion packs which are like extra games - Opposing Force and Blue Shift.

You can buy them all in a bundle called the "Generations" package, which is only £9.97 off Amazon:
http://tinyurl.com/6hhbr

It's worth working through the first couple of games first, as you will then appreciate the story more.

06-Dec-2004, 13:28
OK, the [DSC] bit sounds like a goer, I assume we can just search for that?

We've never even played and there's already a clan name LOL!!!

Well the long way round finished last week, so roughly 9pm tonight I'll be sitting there.... I can go with [DSC] Freak now I guess

FiscusFish

Just added [DSC] Freak to my friends "thingy". Anyone else?

I'll be on about 10.30-10.45

I've been playing since 8.30pm and nobody joined in!

Harv748
07-Dec-2004, 10:18
Whats you HL2 user name antony? I went on a couple of times during the evening and searched for peeps each time but to no avail. The only other DSC'er I found registered was [DSC] Freak.

I think the steam search facility can be a little 'funny' sometimes. It seemed to behave eratically last night!

The best times for me are later in the evening i.e. after about 10.30.

Think I'll stick with WSBK if thats OK

JPM
07-Dec-2004, 10:45
Antony I found you [DSC]_antonye added you to my friends list, and said it was going to send a notification.... then nothing.

I was on and off between 9-11pm trying to find out off here if anyone was on-line...

Maybe we should all use MSN to co-ordinate our games first?

JPM
07-Dec-2004, 11:42
ANYONE WHO'S INTERESTED....

Just been looking on www.steampowered.com to see what's going on with this, it appears there are quite a few issues with the friends network, and not being able to find, connect, chat etc with each other.

The good news is that everyone seems to suggest using a similar product called xfire, so I will be d/loading that tonight and setting that up.

Have a look at xfire (www.xfire.com) and get it downloaded and installed

Yeah, I did the same with you but got nothing back too.

I had great fun running round throwing toilets, radiators, filing cabinets, chairs, barrels, etc at others! Getting the hang of it all now as I haven't played DM properly since Unreal Tournament a few years back!

JPM
07-Dec-2004, 11:57
The xfire thing looks really good, looking at the destructions, and what you can do it sounds really impressive in game instant messaging, and we don't even have to be in the same game!!

Harv748
07-Dec-2004, 11:59
OK...now registered on Xfire as Harv748...no DSC before username this time.

Its seems quite straight forward. Once others register they can be added to your friends list...then away we go!

I know what you mean Antony...at one point I was in a game with 19 others...and it seemed everyone was using the Gravity gun, launching radiators/tables/filing cabinets at each other...all got a bit silly really! You were lucky if you survived longer than 30 seconds!

I think it would be better if they didn't give you the GG to start with as it seems every man and his dog just uses this and nothing else...its better when you find a game were peeps are using the other weapons of choice (ie magnum/crossbow/shotgun etc):o

JPM
07-Dec-2004, 12:04
Me too, I dunno if I that keen on the GG for attacks etc, great for moving stuff etc, but I prefer just all out gun fire etc

It's just a case of knowing how to defeat them. It's only good for a medium-distance weapon so try to get them into tighter spaces where they'll find it harder to fire and pick stuff up. Keep blasting away and you'll get the hang of it.

The best ones are those guys with the GG who are holding explosive barrels - shoot the barrel and they go boom! Last night I was lobbing grenades at one guy and he tried to pick something up to throw at me, but picked up the grenade instead, just as it went off. Another guy threw a filing cabinet at me and I caught it with the gun then threw it back at him and killed him.

It's a great laugh!

Now registered on xfire as "antonye", so stick me in your list and come and find me!

btw... that's an EDS estimate so please allow for some contingency on the timescale...... oh and you might get coffee not tea.... and i might get someone else to make it and cross charge you....

You'll dehydrate before an EDS person gets you a drink!

Freak and myself had a great game of deathmatch last night, bouncing toilets off each other's heads along with a few others!

The xfire thing doesn't seem to be any better than the in-game friends system, but it's like an extra messenger so at least you can see who is online and so on.

More tonight from about 9pm onwards I think :D

Harv748
08-Dec-2004, 10:59
Yep...your on my 'list now...along with Nelly784...who I assume is our nelly from Cornerspeed?

Didn't get a chance to get on last nite...and I'm out tonight till about 10.00...but I'll try and get on after that.

So Xfire tells you who's online...but how do you find out what server they are playing on?

nelly
08-Dec-2004, 11:04
Yep, that's me :)
I tried to figure it out last night and didn't have much luck. Will have another go tonight.
I'm a bit out of touch with all this gaming, but used to play UT tournament a bit, so we'll see.
I'll make good target practice if nowt else :frog:

Harv748
08-Dec-2004, 11:19
So did you manages to get on and play then Neil?

It does take a while to figure just whats goin' on...first few times I was getting battered from all angles, but you soon learn which weapons are best...where they are hidden etc.

I think its also best to go on a server with not too many players, say 8 or 10 max...otherwise it just gets silly...you spawn into the middle of a full blown battle zone and get ****ted straight away!:o

antonye
08-Dec-2004, 11:53
From what I could work out, xfire will tell you which server someone is playing on if you click the "extended info" button which is the arrow on the right-hand side of xfire.

You should then be able to click the Joypad icon to jump into the same server and join them.

However.... we couldn't get this to work last night, but chances are we were doing it wrong anyway, so we simply used xfire as a messaging tool to let each other know where we were.

It may be that xfire doesn't fully support HL2DM as it's so new, and it also seemed that the Steam server auth was knocked out (or dodgy at best) last night too, so that may also have caused problems.

I feel some head scratching coming on........

If we ever get this sorted and end up online at the same time, we should choose a server with no one else on it...would be a laugh!

nelly
08-Dec-2004, 13:12
be interesting if nothing else!!

When we played UT, one of the lads set up a server for just that. Beyond me but maybe one of the IT techies could sort it????

now that would be FUN

JPM
08-Dec-2004, 13:18
Myself and Antony had a good, if not brief blast last night, I feel I need some more practise though, was a bit hectic for me, maybe I'm too used to onslaught in UT2004.

XFIRE worked in the sense that we could talk to each other and organise a server etc, I even wandered off into a CS match, and was still getting messages from Antony even though he wasn't playing.

I'm up for another stint tonight....

What other games have people got loaded? currently I have Doom3, HL2, and UT2004

antonye
08-Dec-2004, 13:19
We were playing on a "closed" server last night which belongs to a colleague. It's a proper gaming server and we will have access to it when they don't need it for tournament stuff.

But beware that they may drop in at any time and they're pretty handy!

Harv748

Blimey Ant...all sounds a bit serious to me:bouncy:

So...and excuse my ignorance here...but say I open Xfire, and then open HL2 deathmatch...does Xfire then disapear or what...do you still use Xfire whilst playing HL or just before it to organise things?

Because...you have to open HL2 to determine a server...but how do you communicate then????

awwwww...my'ed hurts!

Harv748
08-Dec-2004, 13:25
...as for current games...Doom 3, far cry (this would be fanbloodytastic online...must look into that), HL2, joint operations, and a few others.

I'm no expert and we only really tinkered for a few minutes, looks like xfire "should" let you all join the same server, and will keep track of friends and where they are playing, but I don't think HL2DM is fully sorted yet.

You leave xfire running, like steam, and off you go, like I said, I was getting popups (well not quite) off Antony whilst I was in a CS game

antonye
08-Dec-2004, 14:28
According to the xfire guide (you did read it, didn't you?!) you can send messages while in-game by using the (default) "SCROLL LOCK + X" key combination (note that you can change this in the xfire options should you wish).

It didn't seem to be working 100% like the documentation from what I could see, but at least we ended up on the same server!

I should be on tonight...

Next time you run xfire it should auto-update and now supports HL2DM in game :D
