Drilling the swing arm!

Thought that would get your attention.

Any advice on drilling the swing arm and tapping it for the extra bolt on the DP hugger, before I go and do it.

Just take some care not to slip with the drill, a bit of masking tape is a good idea, other than that, just go for it.

I agree with rob, just take a little care and all will be well, I have the extra bolt on my 998 swing arm and definitly find that it stiffens up the hugger installation.

Why not clean the swing arm, and use sticky velco ... it works !!

When putting a hugger on my 998 i looked into this & found the same question asked on Ducati.com and the answer was that its ok ,its in the techie FAQ , or was a while ago

Go with some tough velcro or even some sealant type stuff. Its not really a strong mounting point for the huggers that I've seen, but it does stop the hugger from touching the tyre.

Its probably worth trying this way first even if you do intend to go the drilling route.

theres some stuff out there called "stickaflex" and once its stuck youll have to cut it off with a stanley blade, you can get it from any car paint suplier

Thanks all, I like the idea of the Velcro, I think I’ll give it a go after all works ok on headlight protectors.

I drilled and tapped my swingarm for DP Hugger last week.
Make sure that you use a brand new drill and tap.
I centre punched the hole location after positioning the hugger, then used a 2mm dia "pilot" drill followed by a 5mm dia start drill. I then tapped with an M6 x 1.0mm pitch tap. All went well and hugger is snug as a bug and doesn't flap around like a flappy thing.
Better than bodging it with velcro or sealant!!! :sing:

If you want to fasten the hugger to the swing arm don`t mess about, do it properly and drill it. It takes all of five minutes to do a good job.

Well it’s now done, drilled and tapped. I picked this method in the end because I had all the bits lying around, including a nice stainless cap head to stick in the hole, although drilling a hole in my nice unmolested swing arm didn’t exactly turn me on the result is a solid job. If any one else does this method the drill will not break through in the inside of the swing arm. I have drilled to a depth of about 13mm or more giving a 10mm depth of thread and as Ricky said used a centre punch, followed by a 2mm then a 5mm HSS drill, although mine weren’t new though, and tapped M6x1.0mm pitch thread. (This is the same as the other bolts that hold the chain guard on. :burn:

The other thing I met to say was, I never bothered on my old 748 and the tyre rubber a hole through the hugger, mind you there is less clearance with a 180 any way.

Steve make sure you have the Axle in the right place in relation to the swing arm!

Is it necessary to tap the hole, or would a self-taping screw cut its own thread?

(Just a thought as I've a flappy hugger and no tap...)

I’d definitely tap it. You could give the Velcro method a try, use the stuff that they fix the headlight protectors with, but I think you are asking for trouble with a self tapper.
