View Full Version : Blooo Duke
Now Mort has given "head" to his beloved :o Here's a few piccies for him to gander at as well as you die hard 2V boys and girls to admire.
The bike has had the MBP Testarossa head conversion, BCM 944cc Hi-Comp big bore kit, ST2 cams and a bespoke FIM ecu map. Cams are timed up as per MBP instructions and squish squeezed down to as close 1mm as possible.
Power is expected to be around the 100bhp mark with torque spread out in large amounts from tickover to the new rpm limit of 10k. Peak should be 70NM or better.
Dyno run booked for weds. So watch this space.
This is where, as they say in these parts, the Xmas fairy lives. :o

:D - Good work Nelly.
I need a cold shower :devil::devil::devil:
back in the bike. A few more pipes have appeared. The oil lines to the heads are the new feed. The existing oil ways in the heads have been blocked due to the new valve centres encroaching into them!! Yep, the valves are BIG.....
and from the other side. The new oil feed is picked up directly from the gallery where the oil pressure switch screws in, off an adaptor in the MBP kit.
Webteam....I'd like to report this poster for peddling two valve porn.
Still say it'd look better if the fairing colour matched the heads but never mind all that, where's the 'bluddee jealous' smiley when you want one.
:smug: now where's the harm in a little porn Jools :frog:
It actually looks pretty good in the flesh. The heads just "peak" out at you enough to hint at something being not quite as Bologna intended

I'm lost for words. Not since I stood on the Venezuelan altiplano looking out over 300,000 sq miles of virgins (and some rainforest) have I seen anything so close to perfection. Don't park it round 'ere. I'll nick it. :D
Have fun Mort, and lets see those dyno charts asap.

I look forward to following it around the Jerez GP circuit at the end of the month:lol:

Looks even better in the flesh. Just been up there and they just loading it onto trailer to take it for a dyno run. Now that WILL be interesting, glad I swapped my 916 for a 996....
You know, as my long suffering riding chums will witness, I've been wittering on about getting a more sporty bike (eventually) that I can put in the garage (eventually - when I get a garage) beside the ST. The ST would still be my all weathers, touring/rideout/do-it-all bike, the more sporty something else would be for warm sunny days, mainly road riding but some trackdays. One that I could keep as a special bike to fettle, polish and treat to bits of bling.
I've posted on this board before that yes, I could go down the 998 or 999 road, but because I always like to be different, there's always something that draws me back to the notion of getting an SS and spending the extra dosh that a 999 would've cost on bits to make the SS put out about 100bhp and weigh about 160Kg. That sort of bike with big punchy V-twin torque would make a just about perfect bike for the road I reckon. Wouldn't be out of touch on most trackdays either. Blooo Duke is pretty damn close

My thoughts exactly. Pick up a s/h SS for about £2k, track down a 1000ie engine (there should be loads around soon from numtystruddles/spurtclassic/etc) and spent the spare change on some Ohlins R&Ts, radial brakes, BST carbons, and Testarossa heads. Nest of vipers, trick bodywork and Bob's a close relative.
With the BSTs I reckon you're under 160kg, and a 1000ie with a few mods should easily kick 100bhp. Put some slicks on and you can ride round the outside of lardy 999s while smoking a pipe and reciting poetry.

ali

Well it seems like they're expecting about 100 bhp (altough I shudder to think about the cost) but how would you get the weight down to 160kg ? That seems much harder to me.

Well yes, I shudder to think about blooo dukes cost but then again it can't be any more than other people spend on their pride and joy (thinks...nearly three grand for a 57mm termi system for a 999R which nobody really needs for the extra power). You have to admit, it's a very special bike, it's very different and I'm sure riding it and fettling it brings Mort a lot of pleasure.
100 bhp needn't cost that much though, as Ali says you should be able to pick up a 1000DS motor from a scrappers that'd just drop straight in. Using current Ducati figures (yes, I know they've changed from 'at the wheel' to flywheel figures) the 1000DS motor puts out 95bhp as standard with catalytic convertors and all that jazz. Should be able to see 100 bhp easily with simple things like free flow cans, filters, chips etc or if you want to go mental there's always Sigma's 1080DS conversion with high comp pistons and porting. I guess the main limitation with big bhp is ultimately the two valves, but before that keeping it cool enough limits the bhp you can produce (particularly the rear cylinder). The 1000DS lump has got a new fin pattern and improved cooling, but even so, you're going to get into reliability issues much beyond 100-ish bhp IMHO
As for the weight, again Ducati quote 179Kg standard, so 19 kg weight loss? Once you strip off all the non-essential bits, get some lighter wheels, half fairing and have you felt the weight of the standard cans? Each one of my original ST cans weighs nearly 2Kg more than the DP ones I have. So, it's a challenge, but I reckon it's do-able. Might be eccentric going this route when you could have a sorted 749/999 for the same dosh, but I don't think this is the point. If you want something special and uniquely your own it's always gonna cost.

Well come on....??????
Did you get some good footage?
Where's the readout??????
Come on...I haven't been able to teach all day....I've been beside myself!....Results Mr B please...
Everytime my phone went off I expected it to be you Mort to show off!
Come on Mort! spill the beans!!!!!:puzzled::puzzled::puzzled:
:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D
Well.............what a day.
The video footage is done. Needs putting on a CD.........
Horsepower is where we wanted/expected it to.
YES, it cracked a 100bhp........by 0.2bhp, thats at the crank with 95 or so going to the wheel.
What is more impressive is the torque. 9.9kgm!! That's more or less the same as a 1200 Bandit and about 2kgm up on the 996 lump.
Curve was "flat" to say the least...........across about an 1800rpm band it ran directly across the axis line on the graph!
One of the runs lit the back tyre up a little which with the exhaust at full chat and the smell of burning rubber was ace.
The exhaust note is immense. The note is now deeper than just about any I've heard.
A little bit of tweaking could iron out a few small "dips" but on the whole it's very impressive. Once it's run in "properly" and the motor loosens a bit more then maybe 2 or 3 bhp will be released.
watch out for a bloke driving down the M1 in a yellow van, blue Ducati in tow and a grin as big as the windscreen.
Bloo Duke has been on the steroids. watch out
:cool::burn:

Just done some checking and the torque is about the same as a ST4S.
The ST peaks at 7800rpm and Bloo peaks at about 6800 if I remember.

First, before I drool to much on keyboard, I owe Nelly a debt of gratitude.............so here for all to see Neil,
THANKS MATE for all the hard work, effort and TLC put into Blooo Duke, as well as keeping me placated in my moments of panic
She is AWESOME (sorry to shout, but she is)
The looks of her semi naked body stirred the loins (easy on there mort, you'll have an apoplexy if you're not careful)
Now she's fully clothed and been put thru' her paces, OMG, Oh my dizzy aunt, oh wow.....................
If it were a woman, Claudia Schiffer on speed comes to mind ????????? Non of these Kate Moss type bikes some people have, ..........all speed and no soul.............
The dyno runs, yup we did three, all turned up the same results +/- a gnats c*ck
I just cant wait to get to Jerez to have a likkle pootle round the track and see what see really can do
I must admit when doing the dyno runs, the sound was better than U2 from the front row, AWESOME again comes to mind
If you dont mind, Im just going to drools some more over the dyno charts again,
Nelly is THE MAN, what more can I say

How about an ode for Mort?...
I wandered lonely as a cloud,
and lagged behind those four valve things
'til I got some testarossa heads
and gave my old Blooo Duke some wings
One hundred horsepowers worth of steam,
light in weight and nimble too,
with torque that 996's dream
it's hard to catch a Duke that's Blooo

Bloody 'ell Jools. You have hidden talents!
Are you bored or som'ing :lol:
There are many Ducatis
Ridden by fatties
And a few with thin riders too
But none which were faster
Than Mort's master blaster
The duke that was ever so blooo
There's a club on the web
Where the major celeb
Hasn't four valves, or three valves, but two
An ancient design
Bought forward in time
It's the duke that everyone knew
When quizzed in debate
Nelly did state
"Aye, it's quick for a Blooo!"
But he never displayed
The graph where it made
That magical hundred point two!
Very well done Ali, you freakin nerd!!

Red line is crank, blue at the front sprocket and green at the wheel.

Looking at the footage that I edited yesterday I am seriously worried about my "uncle Mort"...I really dont think he'll be able to handle all that torque...and the sound of the cans will definately get through those custom made ear plugs.
Perhaps we ought to swap and you have my "safer" 750s and I will look after Bloo...For health and safety reasons Obviously:devil:
