On other bikes i've had when you want to lock the steering with the key you either can lock it to both sides or you can only lock it with the steering to the left.
But on my 999R i can only lock it if i turn the steering fully to the right.
I found that strange so i checked on the owners manual and it says it lock to the left, so now i'm like WTF!!! :puzzled:

Is that normal?
JPM, Dave W, how does it work on yours?

you may have a left hand drive model.

I have a 749R which will lock when the steering is turned to the left....haven't tried the right yet but will do so immediately

dont worry ducnow, if they are like the 916 series bikes and if I remember right, the steering lock doesn't work at all on the steep head angle.

But this doesn't look like an upside down yoke, does it?
If a yoke is what i'm thinking.........

Now what is strange is that your 749R does not have a 749R tank but a standard one , why is that then ? :puzzled:

JPM

Isn't it an 04 999R?

dickieducati

because its a 999r

Ducnow
07-Apr-2005, 13:29
Yes, it's a 999R.

I still don't know why it only locks to the right :puzzled:

JPM, does your 999R locks to both sides?

Murray Mint
07-Apr-2005, 14:05
You need to check that the lockstop is not bent, this happened to my bike after i droped it. The lockstop is welded into the frame is mot very robust, Pete at Pro V's just bent it back but be carefull when bending it back.

Mine locks both ways :D You must have a bent one:D

I personally think that you lock stops need to be adjusted ;)

Thank to all for checking and giving advice.

I call my dealer and he said..... "errr..... it's a Ducati it happens sometimes...." :D
They'll check it out when i go there for first service.

I'll check the lock stop to see if it's from there.

Are the lock stops supposed to be ajusted, or if it's not working right it means it's bent?

There are adjusters for the lock settings, could be that your machine was not correctly setup when it left the dealers.

It's a Ducati, so it could be......

the 04 bike had the old coils fitted (they look like the the spark plug caps but with thinner wires) these coils had the connector plug attatched the the coil at the cylinder head.
the new 05 ish ( as some later bikes came with the new coils)
have a cable leading off from the coil about 10cm with a connecting plug on the end.
to tell the difference -
on the rear / standing cylinder the sparkplug cap/coil should just be visible from the left hand side.
if the plug attaching to this coil is stituated directly on the cylinder head this is the old type

Old type on mine then :( Only a matter of time then !!

nathanhu
07-Apr-2005, 23:57
the problem is with these old coils and plug arrangement is that the contacts in the wiring plug (AMP type) start to corrode and build up a layer of oxydisation on the mating faces thus causing an earth fault to the front (mostly) cylinder.
the short term rectification is to disconect the coil and remove it .

inspect the inner contacts of the LT wiring plug looking for green tinge the the contact faces
do the same to the coil
spray a little WD40 into/onto the coil Lt plug
iff it happens all the time then twist the metal prongs inside the coil 1-2 deg to help induce a better / tighter fit to the LT plug
