I need a new chain and sprockets set for my 748bip (12000 miles) I've been quoted £149.67 +VAT for OE eqipment, and approx 2hrs labour @ £32hour. It's turning into the cost of a minor service!
Does this sound about right/expensive?
Is OE the best way to go?
Is it a job best left to the pros, or go mail order and have a crack?
Thanks,
Matt

Seems a bit dear to me £149.67+£64.00+VAT = £251.06
I paid £125.00 for the C&S and got it fitted by a local non franchised dealer for £35.00. I always hang around the workshop and watch the work being done. Small m/c shops always seem to appreciate this type of work.

Professional chain breaker would cost you about £35. It is actually not very hard doing this yourself!
Gold DID chain cost me £85 although I read that they were not the best (Regina is better apparently). Front and rear sprockets should be cheap-ish and you could get some nicer ones like a lightweight AFAM for instance.
Carefull about the pitch though. 520 on 748 and 525 on 996.

Give Mike Davis a ring...He does them and may give discount to DSC members.
Do a 'search' via the link in the menu under the message board logo above for his name and you should get his number/contact details.

I ended up ordering an OE spec gold DID chain and sprocket set from Snells this afternoon, using the 10% DSC discount. Snells and OnyerBike both have over a months workshop waiting list, so I'll take it to a local bike shop, which is cheaper anyway. Needs to be done soon as I don't want any probs at Brands Indy later this month. All in all saved about £50 worth of beer tokens!:sing:
