Could any of you who own the rare beast that is the 998s mono what spring they have in the Ohlins shock - mines a 998s bip with a single seat & the shock felt a bit too hard at Brands today

Apart from that it's the best bike I've ever ridden!!

diablo corsa's worked well (feel not as good as rennsports) with a 190/50 (245mm ride height) but I have mag wheels on it so the turn in is very quick compared to 748sps

Not sure about the 15/38 gearing - might try 14/38 for better drive in 2/3/4?? - anyone tried this??

Still in one piece - which is nice - 6 out of 7 sessions red flagged - it was GSXR1000/R1 carnage!

Thanks

are you running a standard rear sprocket ? i just though from memeory that std rear was 36t, but perhaps youve changed it?:puzzled:

i changed mine to 14 front and found it better suited the gearing to trackdays and then went up one at the rear also, i think its 14 /37 now

Std gearing on 996R which is pretty much the same engine as the 998S is 15/36.
I have dropped to 14/36 which is much better and when chain is replaced will change that to 15/38 as its kinder to the chain with the larger 15 tooth front sprocket.

can you get away with that 15/38 arrangement ok with std chain size?

No i believe you need a longer chain, hence i'm waiting for chain to be replaced before going to the 15/38

I think the std gearing is 15/36 for a 998s (renthal guide)

I've got a renthal quick release unit (150-200ish) & longer gold did 525 chain

I'm not sure I like 15/38 still a bit fluffy in slow traffic in 1/2 as my 748sps is before I went up 3 at the rear

Thinking of 14/38 but not sure if it'll make the power a bit on/off in 2nd on the track???

anyone tried it - whats 14/37 like??

Also was amazed how little engine braking there was going down from 3 to 2nd at Druids - felt less than my 748sps!!

15/36 is OEM for 998s

That's more likely to be the fueling Chef - get someone with a dyno like Moto Rapido to set it up for you, they will amaze you with what a difference it'll make. The engine isn't as smooth low down with 50mm Termis and open CPU because it is usually running way too rich - look for carbon coating on the exhaust trumpets - and needs setting up. Runs far nicer IMHO on standard cans and CPU even though you lose 8bhp at the top end I never missed it on my 998FE and am leaving the 996R as it is for now.

The lack of engine braking compared to what you're used to is down to the shorter stroke engine being easier to turn over. Try an original 916 for vicious engine braking

Thanks Henners

I think you could be right & motorapido look like a good outfit - website looks good & very helpful

Couldn't get rid of the 50mm system - just for the noise alone!!

Glad all the engine breakings gone to be honest.......

You're right about the noise when you're at a standstill but when you're on the move all you can hear is the airbox anyway and doesn't that 998 sound awesome??? :D

Chef

1091-16/84 L431 are the markings on the Ohlins spring fitted to the rear shock of my 998s Mono.

Hope this is of some use.

My apologies for the delay in getting back to you.
