View Full Version : Trouble at mill

Following a full service on the 996R I was looking forward to getting some miles under the new Corsas and went off on a jaunt with Webby to Worthing on one of the hottest days of the summer a couple of weeks ago. All went well until we got to the town and in the stop-start run through to the seafront the engine soon got up to 115C with both fans going furiously – the enclosed fairing always run the engines hot in traffic. Coming back out of the town the engine started to lose power – almost as if it was cutting out on one cylinder and it was a struggle to keep her going at traffic lights. Out onto the open road and although the temperature dropped the problem persisted – you would get up 7000rpm and then the engine would slowly lose power until the revs dropped back down to 4-5000 – open the throttle made it worse, then all of a sudden full power would cut in and wheeeeeh ….

After a while the problem disappeared and didn’t come back until the engine got hot again some days later. Over the last week the problem has been there almost constantly so I spoke to Snells who managed to free up Carl for a couple of hours to look at it. Prior to going I armed myself with a new ECU just in case courtesy of the kind and generous Andy Banes (andyb) who sent me three to try – thanks Andy :)

Well, the problem is now solved. Any idea what it was? A prize for nearest the right answer ..... :eureka:

Thermostat not opening properly leading to overheating leading to intermittent sensor operation????

My 998 runs at this temp in traffic but no loss of power just a hot bum! is this a problem ? should I be looking to correct it?

Slipper clutch (although I have no idea why!!!)

Glue on the twist grip had gone un sticky with the heat so it was slowly rotating around on the grip and closing the throttle.

Mark
06-Jul-2005, 14:45
or loose throttle cable

that pollishing cloth you couldn't find turned up in your air intake

.... not that laterally

It's to do with the fans and the heat ....

fans blowing hot air into air intakes

Mark
06-Jul-2005, 15:30
Fans were fitted the wrong way round, or spinning the wrong way round?

[Edited on 6-7-2005 by Flanks]

rockhopper
06-Jul-2005, 15:31
Fans blowing so hard they were causing a vaccuum around the airbox and actually sucking air out of the engine.

Mr_S
06-Jul-2005, 15:34
fan blades broken, not shifting enough air, and binding causing a massive current drain resulting in the electrical system being overworked blah blah blah...

TP
06-Jul-2005, 15:35
Fans were yellow and therefore too slow?

Have the fans cut through a wire of some sort?????

Mark
06-Jul-2005, 15:52
Something to do with the temp sensor? Coming loose or something?

Henners
06-Jul-2005, 15:54
... get together you're alost there :smug:

Mark
06-Jul-2005, 15:56
Air temp sensor came loose, and was reading the engine as cooler, so the fan was not working or fan was blowing cold air onto sensor?

[Edited on 6-7-2005 by Flanks]

Some cotton thread wrapped around your Fanny Bits?? causing your baby to get all hot and sweaty??

What was the question again??

Ps you need to ride in the rain more often.

Please put us out of our misery!!!

Twinfan

Fans going overboard made the air temp sensor think it was cooler than it really was. ECU didn't compensate for the heat, so it was running rich at high revs therefore losing power???

ziggi
06-Jul-2005, 16:46
the twist grip got too hot and un-glued from the handle bar and when you twisted it only twisted the grip and not the throttle slide :D

The engine was directly powering the fans and not the rear wheel :D

Are these latteral enough?

ali
06-Jul-2005, 16:47
Several fans were arrested during a heated exchange???

Jools
06-Jul-2005, 16:49
Oooh Henners you are a tease !!!

I'd have a guess, but I can't be ars...:frog:

Fans have cut a wire to temp sensor? or fans vibrate a connection loose?

Henners
06-Jul-2005, 17:10
Somehow the air temperature sensor feed wire managed to get dislodged and came into contact with the edge of the blades on the second radiator fan. When the engine got really hot the fan fired up and the blades started to chaffe through the senor feed wire disrupting the signal and confusing the CPU - which affected the fueling. Once the temperature dropped the fan switched off and the exposed wire intermittently got blown/knocked against the fan housing causing ongoing false readings and bad running.

Carl at Snells figured it all out and showed me how it happened - thanks for joining in folks and 1st place to Freak who got it spot on - except Jools of course who couldn't be ar$ed
