748 standard air filters

Hi,

I need to know if the standard foam type air filters that sit in the air runners on my 748 can be serviced?

The Haynes manual states that they should just be replaced. I would rather clean and re use but..........................what is the general opinion here amoungst owners? And if they can be cleaned, what does every body use?

For the price I just replace them.... Aren't they only about £20 or so...

Pipercross - direct replacement around £20.Much better than standard.

Without the airtubes and filters in place, so the air intake is exposed would the bike still run, or just cough, splutter and die?

remove the mesh, restrictors inside the air tubes, std filters and throw them away.

replace with an ITG filter inside the airbox.

Make sure you read Shazzams posts carefully to obtain the optimum conditions for 748/916 models and why.

Basically it's:

Airtubes (yes, you need airtubes to get air effectively into the airbox)
Pipercross standard type filters in the airtubes (improved airbox resonance)
No aftermarket in-airbox filter (as this reduces the airbox capacity)

The big reason to replace the std ones is that they let crap through into the airbox :o
What you want is a big washable foam hat over the inlet trumpets :burn:
All the other advice is pants if you get leaves and crap down your trumpets :cool:
