View Full Version : Getting an engine out.... (and obviously back in)

Well just sort of wondering on this one really.
Debating on how easy/hard it is to get the engine out of a 916.
Reason, my back of engine is scruffy and could do with rubbing down and painting.
So how much work is involved and where exactly would one start ?
Not that hard Steve. Body work, air box etc. off.
Injectors and cooling system out of the way. Exhausts off.
Get all the wires and cables out of the way then three bolts and your there ;)
A bit simplistic, but you get the picture :)
The only usual problem is the swingarm pivot. If it's seized, then you may need another 4 hours.............. if you're lucky.
Refitting is, as they say, a reversal of the above. Get a Haynes, a helping pair of hands and your tool kit and you'll be off!!

Cheers mate, was just chatting to big Al as well while you were writing this :)
Sounds simple enough really. pretty much a weekend task for me and one of the boys.
Will see you on Sat and have a quick peek where the engine mount bolts are located and chat about the 'paint' type side of things.
Thanks fella.

Look here...you won't be the first this year!

As Nelly says...the real sod is the swingarm bolt...I guess its possible to test if its gonna budge before you start? Save you stripping the bike down, only to get stuck with the bolt and having to put it all back together again a beaten man!??
Mine wouldn't, so I left the engine in the frame and just removed everything else!
I guarantee your swing arm bolt will be stuck.
otherwise a quick job. good luck

Tell me more about the Swingarm bolt then guys ?
i'm working in London so can't shoot down and have a peek at Ceris bike.
the other option is to do in situ but not sure i'll be able to get enough of the engine in the confined spaces.

Mine came out rear easy, some people had problems with it sticking half way.
You could always try and remove the swing arm bolt first to see if it will move easily or not, and if it doesn't move DON'T strip your bike:smug:

See above thread...all explained in graphic detail !
Basicaly it can seize itself in there and can take HOURS to remove...even by the pro's.
Its pot luck basically...some can almost be pushed out by hand (well, not quite) whilst others get out so far, then no more, and need drilling/cutting out...not a nice job.
sorry you may be ok.
its all down to how much bad weather they have seen.
those that don't know rain exists are generally ok

Dave the previous owner was not scared of a bit of rain...
soapy water... that's a different matter hey Dave :)
Be bluddy carefull with the swingarm bolt Steve.
It will need a fair bit of persuasion (9 out of 10 Dukes prefer to be tight barstewards). It might seem ok to use a 'drift' to hammer like buggery on the bolt but you can 'flare' the threaded end of the bolt (errrrmmm...like I did :( Doh!!! ) which makes it impossible to get back in or get the locking nut on once it is back in.
Go steady and be patient. It can take an age to get free. From now on I'll be removing mine each winter to polish and grease it up so's removal isn't such a chore.

Took mine out of the 996. Pushed out with no problem at all ... guess i was one of the lucky ones.
One suggestion would be to try and take it out before taking everything off. Would be a pain to have the bike stripped and carfully balanced to then find you need to start hammering the swing arm pivot.
