Help and advice please - Rear axle issue

Chaps,

I am currently rebuilding my 748 following it's winter stripdown and have found a problem with the rear axle.

Basically it will only fit into the eccentric hub if I knock it in with a pretty hefty hammer. I can't remember now when I removed it but should it not just slide in freely by hand?

Also once it is in it will barely turn!!

Can any one offer some advice please? Could it be the bearings?

I am at a loss as it is the original part that I took out which was fine!?

From a recent experience the hub does need a gentle tap to knock it in and out .... maybe daft, but, make sure the pinch bolts are completly loose on the back of the swing arm.

As for it turning I had to use the C spanner, it will not turn without it.

My axel slid into my hub no problems without having to hit it!
Would it be possible for you to take some pics on how you are trying to fit it (seems like a stupid request but we might see something you have missed).
I take it the hub has been fitted the right way round (daft again, I know)

If you have done up the pinch bolts to tightly you could have cruched the bearings!!!

I'll have a look at that as everything was ok before! I did wonder if it may be worth replacing the bearings?

comes as a a unit. but you can change bearings.

have you had the swing arm refinished build up of powder coat or paint?

Sounds like one of the rollers in the bearing got dislodged. Hitting it could've damaged the bearing cage.

Ended up replacing the whole unit which has solved the problem!!!
