front brake

coming home tonight i found when i pulled the front brake it was making a rubbing noise as if the pads are not biting into the discs and slight vibration :puzzled:

You might have picked up some oil or grease contamination. Have you had the front wheel out lately or had a new tyre fitted at all?

Could be some gunk in your callipers? I'd get it checked out matey...

What machine have you got - model/year ? Reason for asking is that I have a 749 Dark about 4 months old and it sounds like it's doing somthing similar. Although my problem occurs after I've stopped, as I pull away it sounds as though the brake calipers are not releasing properly and I get a graunching noise. I'm curious to see whether there's a theme here.

Are you sure the frond end graunching noise wasn't the clutch?

my bike is a 999 bip grey swing arm .and its not the clutch because it happens when im free wheeling down my drive way :puzzled:

Jiminy - sounds like it might be the clutch as Khu says.

Duc Daz - have you got glazed pads?

Daz - don't ride it. Either strip/clean/check your brakes yourself or get your dealer to pick your bike up. Just out of interest, is it an '04 model?

had this problem with my 03 999 as I applied the brake there was a lot of vibration or chatter from the front end and the brake's felt very wooden.
This was bad in the wet as the brakes did'nt work at all at first and then grabed strongly. (nearly cost me my life, out one day when it was wet).
took it to Carl Harrison's in Harleston and he said i had glazed the pads.
Im not a fast rider so this supprised me!!!. However, he was spot on.
hope this helps........ the boys are right, get someone to look at it.

Nope - not that I'm aware of.

Ducati and Brembo couldn't find a fault with the brakes, but as a goodwill gesture they very kindly repaired the bike for me.

i had the same problem on my 749BP 2005 model, took it back to On Yer Bike and they tested it thoroughly on the road and off. Informed me that the front discs were slightly warped and they are changing both discs and pads under warranty. I know what you mean by symptoms it's as if the pads are not gripping the discs properly, slight pulsing/vibes and a weird noise. I will let you know if new discs/pads sorts the issue.

I have had an odd problem with my brakes - 05 999s - that I managed to sort this morning - here is what has happend . . .

new 999s April 05
Original MC retained - mated to my Monoblocs
throught the 05 riding season (6000 miles) no problems
bike laid up for 6 weeks in Nov
calipers serviced
brakes start to bind when remounted on the bike
bike serviced - brakes still binding
calipers serviced again - then replaced on bike
still binding
stripped the whole front brake system, new washers, new fluid etc this morning and re-bled thoroughly incl special attention to the MC
still binding
thought that it might be the pads
when I applied the MC - I quickly undid the top banjo to see if this releases the pressure - no luck
bled once more - calipers & MC with new fluid - SORTED!!!

no binding - wheel runs freely

I am guessing that there is either a fault with the MC - it didnt seem to be releasing the pressure in the system or it was all down to a bubble!!

Never ever had this problem before - weird or what???

My best guess is a tiny tiny air bubble in the MC at the very top of the brake system.

ive took it into JHP COVENTRY and told them about the problem .Hope they can sort out the problem .:barfy:

I took my 999 out the other day and the brakes were binding, after a good look I striped the brake callipers of the bike and found my problem, the brake pads had rusted to the callipers.
a quick rub with a brass brush ect and a tooth pick to put a small amount of copper slip on the touching surfaces and there better than new,

I treat it like I,m doing a better job so I get a better bike than the one I bought, you would never get a factory mechanic to take as much care and time as I would as time is not a issue to me, but I do under stand where your coming from and in a perfect world their bikes would survive the weather better, they will do it under warranty, ?
